I've found the perfect dress....negotiation help!

Mrs*W*2B, 2 August, 2012 at 15:17 Posted on Planning 0 13

Wasn't going to go dress shopping so early but a beautiful (very expensive) shop near us were having a sample sale ( which is rare for them) so decided to go and have a look...could try 6 dresses and last 1 I picked that was actually just to make up numbers I fell in love with....

I didn't buy it as the price difference from new to sample wasn't enough for the condition I felt but I'm now wanting to buy it new...I went yesterday to try sample again as it hadn't sold and still loved everything about it BUT the dress is £1190 new plus £50-£150 for alterations plus £145 for veil that I love too (cathedral length) and £100 to add lace cap sleeves so all in wayyyyy over budget....I have rang other stockists and one came back more expensive and one was £987 for the dress...the shop I have been to twice now has been amazing and I would love to buy from them but I'm not sure if it's cheeky to ask if there's anything they can do wih the price especially as I'd like to get the veil from them too...has anyone been successful in asking for money off a full price dress or throwing in accessories etc?

They did tell me they might be able to do something with the sample price without me asking but I don't feel the condition is up to scratch

Any tips or success stories on negotiating welcome! X

Ask. If you don't ask you don't know. The worst they can do is say no. I got money off my veil when I asked for a discount.

Have you looked at getting your veil elsewhere? Either pink margaret or wedding veils direct etc like I did? That would probably save you £100 on the veil.

Then I'd be looking at contacting the dress shop and asking if they can do the alterations for free. If they say no, there's no harm in saying that you've found the dress at this price elsewhere and then seeing what they say.

If they flat out refuse is there any reason you can't go to the other shop? Is it miles away? How much do they charge for alterations?

I could look into getting the veil elsewhere and thinking I will if there's no budge on the dress price...I'm going to tell them I can get it over £200 cheaper elsewhere which is the truth..

This other bridal shop is a fair bit further away and I just feel the service has been amazing so far on the 2 visits to this one, the other shop wouldn't give me an idea of alteration price as they would need to discussin more detail! I'm going to email them and see what they say (I'm rubbish on the phone!)

    Fingers crossed! thanks for advice

I knew I'd fall in love with an expensive one! Damn! X

Ahh, I'm rubbish at negotiating sorry, but I am nosey! Which dress is it? Give us a flash!

Would you consider pre-loved to save money?

I've tried preloved and nothing! Smiley sad

I have emailed and had a reply saying they can't do anything on the new dress but can lower the sample by £100 but to be honest it's still too expensive for the amount of pulls and fluffy bits on the lace.

I may have to go full price!

The dress is 'Ellie' by Charlotte Balbier but with lace butterfly sleeves...it doesn't look that great online but makes me feel amazing! I can't flash on the iPad but if you type it in google it should come up doesn't do it justice though!!

Why were you only allowed to try on 6 dresses?!

I'd just ask outright if you've got their best price before you do your research...

Oh it's gorgeous. How frustrating about the price. CB doesn't seem to be too popular yet so can see why there aren't many pre-loved's around. Can you raise any extra cash to afford it? If you decide you def don't want the sample, can you sit on it a while until after this wedding season is over and then hunt for a pre-loved? Or maybe another shop has a sample in better condition?

They've said that's their best price, I've emailed and they said no to the new dress and a hundred off the sample...and at the sample sale it was 20 min appointments as it was busy so that's why couldn't try everything on I just love the dress it's so frustrating but I think il have to suck it up and try cut down elsewhere x

Nowhere else near has a sample dress... I think now I know there's no discount I will wait until October/November time and see about the preloved like you say...it's this seasons dress so maybe some will come up after summer...hadn't thought of that so thanks! If not then I do have savings out of the wedding budget that I can use so I can 'afford' it I just didn't plan on spending £1500 on my dress it's so much but I love it! X

Ask again. I was in a similar situation, they were adamant they wouldn't knock anything off when I tried it on. I rang back again in a week and asked again, after some thought they came back with £150 off which I was chuffed about. Brought it from outrageously over budget to quite over budget and I bought it! Good luck x

Make sure you tell them this - flattery gets you everywhere! I paid for mine in full up front and got 10% discount - worth asking if you already have some money saved for the wedding

It is in their interest to try and make you get there sample as they want to get rid of it. It might be worth you waiting until their sample sells before negotiating on the new one (although you then massively risk the dress being discontinued). My dress was £1250 but with a lot of persitence and negotiation I got it down to £1100. They make huge interest on dresses so good luck!
