I've just received a water bill thats off the scale - UPDATE

WelshTotty, 10 November, 2008 at 15:30 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

Post dropped through the letter box, I opened it to find a water bill for the last 6 months amounting to nearly £1100!?

We have supposedly used 410 cubic metres of water in 6 months. Our grand total of water use in 6 years is 216 cubic metres, so we have allegedly used 12 years worth of water in 6 months.

They did send me a letter with the bill outlining the erratic water usage and possibility of a leak. So I read the meter which was correct on the bill, so it wasnt a mistake in the reading and I phoned them up. They were v suprised on our usage and asked if we had had anyone staying over lol, (like one person could use that much water in 6 months!) theres only 2 of us in the house, no one staying over and no building works going on. So tonight before we go to bed we have to read the meter, not use any water, then read it again in the morning, phone them with the outcome then they will investigate.

UPDATE

Took a meter reading last night before going to bed and then first thing this morning (banned the flushing of toilets and brushing of teeth until I'd done it) and we managed to use 2 cubic metres of water overnight with the meter still merrily going around even though nothing was turned on. So I now have an investigator booked to visit me next Tuesday to see whats going on.

Joy of joys, this is something I could really do without at the mo.

    Crikey WT ?

I take it if there is a leak, you're not going to have to pay that amount?

Blimey, that's a hell of a big bill. It sound slike your water company is on the case and has spotted the anomally, without waiting for you to point it out. Hope you manage to get it sorted. Are you with Welsh Water?

Rather than do that, turn off your stop *** in the property and wait. That will prove its outside rather than inside.

Don't worry, if it is a leak they should give you that money back. Just be aware that the pipe replacement is not cheap, about £1K.

Aye Im with Welsh Water. If it is a leak and its tween the main and our house then I happen to have a Homeserve insurance policy that covers just that situation should I need to have to dig the road up!

I know this sounds pathetic but I cant physically turn the stopcock as I have weak wrists and it takes a bit of pressure to turn (weak and feeble icon required)

OMG thats huge!! glad they're investigating tho, when we recieved a stupidly large bill from british gas (£600 over normal use) they just expected us to pay no questions asked! we ended up getting the ombudsmen involved to help us out

Brilliant. We didnt and now our pipe has a 10 year warranty we dont need it ? Stopcocks can be a bugger. Is it inoperable or just a bit stiff?

Oops. If it was inoperable I would say to get it replaced as part of the same job but if you're just a bit pitiful ?

You are so lucky that they picked up on it. Mine didnt (and I dont think the one I work for does either!)

We had one like this they asked if i'd bought a new appliance or a pet!

ffs, like I've got a whale living in the back garden!?!

they did find a leak, but the biils kept coming, apparently we were being billed for next doors water and vice versa. good luck, if only they'd refund the phone bills it took to sort it out!

Gingey - its me Im pitiful, I sprain my wrist pushing a door open or changing gear in the car, Im v pitiful lol

Rach - its laughable isnt it? How on earth a pet / appliance / houseguest could use 12 years worth of water in 6 months is beyond me! We shall see tonight when we go to bed and in the morning what the readings are, heres hoping its something that can be rectified.
