Job hunters / redundancy kleek?

Redbedhead, 19 November, 2008 at 15:53 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 29

I know there are a few of us being made redundant at the moment or job hunting so thought it might be nice if we offered a bit of moral support / help / ear for whinges!

I am finding it all rather frustrating at the moment. I am reaching the end of the consultation period and find out end of next week if I will be made redundant (99% sure I will be). My work haven't confirmed the financial side of things yet so I don't know how picky I can be yet re a new job as I don't know what money we will have to live on. It is made more complicated as I am on maternity leave at the moment and wasn't due to return until January and was going back part time. I would still like to go back part time but have been advised by recruitment consultants that part time jobs in my location in accountancy at my level come up once or twice a year! So I am having to debate about whether I can wait for something to come up or need to go back full time. If I go back full time then I hope to not return until March when my daughter is 1. Unfortunately that is making searching for a job quite difficult as that is still a few months away.

So, I just feel a bit in limbo. I am checking all the relevant websites daily and am signed up with a couple of agencies although can only really talk to them for about 2 hours each afternoon when my daughter is asleep, otherwise I spend half my time while on the phone with her trying to grab it and talk down it!!! Except inevitably I can't get through to them in those 2 hours, so have to try the next day etc!

How is everyone else doing?

    I feel your pain!

I have joined the ranks of job hunting for the first time in my life and it's very depressing. I spent all day yesterday in tears ? At this rate I'll be lucky to get a job scrubbing toilets. My freelance work has totally fired up so I've done nothing for over a month and I'm driving myself mad. If I don't get something soon we'll be living in a box. It's been such an awful year for us I'm not sure I'll come out the other end sane.

I found out on Monday that Im being made redundant in the new year, ive a weeks holiday at the start so I think my last day will be 30th December. Like you said RBH its difficult to start job hnting now. Im holding on for my redundancy pay it'll hopefully get us through for a month or so.

Im starting to worry now about bills & the mortgage. Im already dreading Xmas, ive explained to the kids whats happening & being 14 & 12 they understand its going to be a cheap Xmas.

Good luck to everyone job hunting at the moment.

I've applied for 2 jobs today but then I'm away from tomorrrrow until the 10th of December. When I get back I'll contact a couple of recruitment agencies that specialise in my industry.

It's not a good time for airlines right now so I don't know if I'll get something that I really want....I'll have to see what's out there.

    Good luck to everyone else.

Michpuss - I hope you have a lovely holiday and manage to enjoy it and not worry about jobs and the like.

Poochanna - are you looking for a permanent job in the same industry as you do freelance work in?

Nelops - are you looking to stay in the same type of job?

    A kleek I can be a member of - yey! <brave smile>

What industries does everyone else work in? It's intriguing to know whether one has been hit more than others or whether there are just redundancies across the board. I'm an architectural technician so work in the construction industry. Anyone need any plans drawn?!

Well, I've not been made redundant but my H has (also construction) and it means that I'm going to have to look for a new full time job because I took a part time position after maternity leave. Gutted because I actually really like my job ?

Commiserations to everyone else in this position. Hope something turns up soon. ?

I've just had confirmation from the Insolvancy service of my payment (my employer went into administration) and the little bit of good news is that I will get five weeks wages rather than the four I'd first thought. Still I'm struggling on an emotional level with it all because of the suddenness and way it all happened and also because I will almost certainly have to return to work full time now, at least for a while as there's nothing part time around.

It's fair to say I'm on a roller coaster right now - one minute fine, then anger, then grief then optimistic but I'm still working on my consultancy idea and have been doing some networking with old contacts so there's a few options.

Oh I can join this kleek too. I was informed today BY EMAIL that I no longer have a job, cant believe they didnt have the balls to tell me face to face. Im currently on maternity leave so dont really have to worry about looking for a job just yet, just hope I can keep getting maternity allowance from the government. I guess I need to look into that.

I did work in the travel industry, I wont start looking for a job until May time, would ideally like to go back to what I was previously doing before having children (systems Tester) but cant really be done part time.

Yikes, that's not good. I found out informally via facebook and my colleagues' statuses that there was a huge problem, and it took HR nearly 7 hours from the announcement to contact me[:'(] I was in the energy industry but doubt I'll get another job in it at the moment.

Not strictly in the kleek although I've still not had my offer letter and I was offered the job verbally on Monday last week. The directors who my boss told have been far from discreet and I've had to tell 2 offices about me leaving before I've handed my notice in. I cried when I left one of the offices last week, and again when I left another one today. I'm wondering whether I've mad the right decision. Things are *** at work generally as I work for a property firm, so I know I should go as there will be more redundancies etc over the next few months, but I'm too attached! Gah.

Sorry to hear of the uncertainty - it will be better once you finally know where you stand and can make some solid decisions.

    Yep sunny Swindon.

Not very many jobs at the moment here, is your new job going to be in Swindon or will you still commute?

Where have you been looking? I applied for 4 jobs and got offered interviews for all of them, but only went for one. It's at the hospital. They have quite a few jobs on their website.

That is crap re the email. It might be worth checking to see what they do legally. I am being made redundant on mat leave as well but my entitlement to SMP is stopping within a week or so as I have had my 39 weeks. Another friend was made redundant on Monday and she is having all her mat leave to 39 weeks still paid by the company (which takes her to March time) so I wonder if they have to pay the mat leave still?

    Count me in.

i am (until next friday) in manufacturing sector. I registered with an agency and then another one as I am interested in a specific vacancy they have. I am currently still having the 'but i never wanted to be an administrator, its not fair i hate filing' tantrum quite regularly. I can be fussy until January and then I have to lower my standards and pay expectations and take what I can. dammit.

Ive looked on nhs website but as I dont need a job until next year and I need part time its a litle more difficult. The hospital is good to work out but unless is a specialist job the pay is quite poor. My mum works there and I got a job there last year but due to child commitments I couldnt take it.

Redbedhead, I wasnt entitled to SMP from my employers I get Maternity Allowance from the government. I *think* Im still entitled to it, I looked at thwe website and it didnt mention anything but Ill call the help line when it opens this morning

I've been unemployed for 6 weeks - was at an architectural practice. Have had NO INTERVIEWS so far (haven't been applying to architecture again), and I have no confidence anyway so if I did I'd probably screw it up!! Good luck everyone with upcoming interviews/applications:-) N x

Try not to talk yourself down. Would some interview practise help? Some agencies will offer this and if not, maybe your OH / friends would be able to help?

Sorry only just got back to this.

There's little point in trying to get a full time job in events as they are making lots of people redundant. I've lost about 2 weeks work in December as companies have cancelled their Christmas events as they "can't be seen to be throwing money away in this climate", it's pants!! I'm now applying for stuff that's below what I was doing 10 years ago and still getting nowhere. It's pretty soul destroying! I have an interview tomorrow for an horrid job that's about a fifth of what I usually earn and if they offer it me I'll have to take it. A year ago I was planning weddings for Wags, now I'm a waitress ?

Sorry to hear bout everyone else ?

I really know what you are talking about there. The only part time roles I can find are paying less than I got 10 years ago when I first qualified as an accountant. It narks me off as I have worked hard to get where I am and now probably can't stay at that level because of wanting to work part time.

Even if I go full time there is no guarantee I will get another well paying job as there are a lot of people out there going for fewer roles.

    It is very demoralising.

    sigh.

Not strictly speaking a true member of this kleek but feel I am by proxy

I am a contractor for a company that has recently announced lots of job cuts in the uk, so by default my job gets opened up to permanent members of staff, if one takes it I am out...

So have been job hunting in case, to be honest though Im finding it to be a really boring job anyway so would prefer to look elsewhere if I can

I have registered for a few positions via agencies some of them permanent (which will be a step up for me) and a few contracts, have also applied for a few PhDs just to keep my options open

    I am in pharmaceuticals

Nature of the Industry is generally you don`t get feedback. Was really demoralised after the Aurigny and HiFly interviews. With Aurigny they flew us out to Guernsey and wanted to interview 6 of us for 4 jobs. The 3 of us on the Wednesday were the more experienced and of the 3 on the thursday 2 were very unexperienced. None of us on the Wednesday go it and on the thursday all 3 picked up the positions plus one other that interviewed separately on the friday. So wasn`t sure whether they wanted some experience, but not too much or what on that one.

The HiFly one was last week and a really quick interview process, interview wednesday, possibly start monday, but then put back to thursday (today). After my interview they asked any questions, so asked when likely to hear, the response was "Yes or No`s friday, most most likely yes" I couldn`t sleep thursday night then found in my spam box late friday a thanks but no thanks...

Just lots of competition at the moment, Zoom and XL cabin crew plus a lot of 11 month contract crew have been released by BA.

I see, I didn't realise you were looking for part-time. Yes the money is shite, I'm taking a 30% pay cut and I wasn't on loads to start with! We will have no disposable income I guess but the travelling I do now costs about £6k a year I reckon so that will make up some of the loss. Plus 35 hours week from 60 will be bliss!

I was made redundant last November and like Redbednead I want a part time job in accountancy. The only ones that have come up have been too far to commute.

I was in the travel sector and my redundancy was more due to my maternity leave than anything else, the swines! I couldn't prove it but I got a lot more than what was originally offered which implies guilt don't you think?

Anyway, I'm on the jobless bench and with mountin credit card debt I too may have to bit the bullet and try for full time and hope I get something!

This is what worries me as well - the redundancy will only last so long and then I will have to look full time anyway. I wish we lived closer together - we could job share!!
