Job interview question (teaching related)

essexmum, 4 July, 2009 at 09:08 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

I've got a job interview on Tuesday for a job I really really want. It's a learning support supervisor (basically a cover teacher). Now I've got loads of experience working with children (currently work in the boarding part of a private school and I'm a scout leader), however I've never done any 'classroom' work, but hopefully with this job I can apply for a GTP in the next couple of years. I've been sent an email confirming details and I will be covering a year 9 lesson for 30 minutes and they are doing poetry, would be ok if I emailed back asking what poet or indeed poem they will be studying so that I can download a copy and look at it before the lesson, that way I can be better prepared? Or is that fact I'm totally unprepared the point (I'm assuming most cover teachers don't get any notice of what they'll be covering).

I've already been a bit forward with regards to the interview, background is that they phoned me on Tuesday inviting me for interview on Friday, when I told them I couldn't do Friday due to my graduation the said they would ring me back with another appointment. My son is starting this school in September and he had his 'change-over' day on Thursday and as I still hadn;t heard back I went into the school office and introduced myself (apologoising for the way I as dressed as I was in jeans), it seemed to go down ok as I got a call back an hour later with a new date!

Anyway what do you think, should I ask?

I don't think it would hurt your chances. We had interviews at our school last week for a cover supervisor and the man who covered my lesson was given about 15 minutes before hand to chat through with me what to expect from the class and what I wanted them to do. Generally you wouldn't get any prior information when doing the job, but you would probably know the kids (or they'd know you) so having some prior knowledge of what you'll be expected to cover means that you can concentrate on the things they'll be looking for like presence, manner with the students, coping with questions (and for my poor man, when the video didn't work properly - he got the job though!).

I'd give them a ring, they can only say no!

    And congratulations on your graduation!

All the best for your interview. I can't help as it's not my area of teaching but just wanted to wish you well.
