Job related stuff

PhoebeBuffay, 15 May, 2008 at 13:08 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

So, I have a few job things in the pipeline, well 3, I have an assessment day(well they say day, it's 4 hours long, not an airline) for one of them and is a company in town which is pretty easy to get to, the other 2 I'm just waiting to hear back from.

  • Job 1: Involves Assessmet day, apparently a great company to work for, involves a credit check, in centre of town, literally less than 2 mins walk from bus stop, ok money, nice friendly and fun environment. Room to grow and develop.
  • Job 2: Is a job which is a little closer to me, it's actually near a company I used to work for, it's taking over from a woman who has been there 8 years, is an Admin/Support type role and will involve alot of taking on someone elses backlog which they can't clear. Little bit more money than job 1, don't think there is much room for growth but not sure.
  • Job 3: Job in centre of town, sounds ok, less money than both 1 & 2, again an Admin type support role, not sure about growth either.

I really want Job1, I have explained already that a credit check came back bad because I was associated with ex and they said if I get that far, they will just see what happens as different companies do it on different levels. Obviously I need a job ASAP so I can get my own house again, whilst 1 is less money than job 2, it's not by much just 1k and I feel if I got it with the growth you can do, you can go up in pay, where with job 2, I don't think there is much room for that at all. I think I'm dismissing job 3 purely on the fact that there is a few thousand £s difference between 2 & 3 and obviously I have a dependent to think about.

Just posting to write it down and get it straight in my own mind, I will keep all doors open for time being until I've been for assessment day etc with Job1, but my thinking and how I'm going about it is right, isn't it? It is for me, I think.....hmmmmmm.

You'll probably find that the credit check will be fine as long as it doesn't suggest you have been fraudulent.

I don't think there's many jobs that will care if you missed a few bill payments, that kind of thing.:-)

Thanks Zebra. I knew my own credit was ok, but somehow I have been linked to ex who has/had bad credit (which I was unaware of whilst we were together) He has also defaulted on his mortgage which was on my check as well. I spoke to Experien last month and told them I'm no longer associated with him, I had to send them various documents, so hopefully that will put mine back to normal pretty quick.

If you work within a financial company it is standard practice to carry out a credit check on you. Has been for years. I guess it depends how much you want the job.

PB, at least you have mentioned it up front so you hopefully shouldnt hit the same problem as before.

I work for a bank and had to have a credit check. If you have managed to separate your finances from you ex then you should be fine. They do look at it on a case by case basis too so am sure thye'd take those circumstances into account.

What Bettyb said - my H had a credit check because he works with financial information. I don't think it's particularly cheeky in those circumstances, I'd imagine they'd also have checked for a criminal record.

Sorry, should have said, it is for a financial company, well insurance I think, they do everything. Hopefully it'll be ok, if it's not, then there will be something else.

Bizarre, I've worked in Finance for the last 12 years and have never had a credit check, CRB, oh yes, but never my personal credit history, I fail to see what my financial status has on my ability to do my job (for the record I am crap & fairly non-plused with my own finances, but *** hot with other peoples ?)

I'm just going off what it says on the form and it says that if you're offered the job a credit check will be carried out by a credit referencing agency. Same thing happened the other month when I went for a job at the head office of Nationwide.

An ex work colleague of mine keeps getting to job offer stage (she's an exec level PA) and fails at credit check as her finances are a mess.

We work in the banking industry and the checks are happening all the time. I don't think it's fair in her case - her being rubbish with her own finances doesn't impinge on her being able to be a PA or not.

    Hi Phoebe,

When is the assessment day? will it be before you hear back from the other roles so you have the thinking time? just curious, but why did the job with Nationwide not work out? i'm asking as from your previous posts i know where you are based and can guess the company you are referring to who are hlding the assessment day, but Nationwide is a much larger employer who has a lot of current vacancies. perhaps worth relooking at?

if it is an admin type role you are considering, have you targeted some of the othe rmajor local companies such as Honda, WHSmith and Intel?

    Alice
