Former political journalist John Sergeant has decided to pull out of the BBC One show Strictly Come Dancing.

The 64-year-old has received strong support from the public since the show started, but the judges have been critical of his dancing.

In a statement, he said: "The trouble is that there is now a real danger that I might win the competition. Even for me that would be a joke too far."
See Kenny Logan, you neanderthal unrythmic lumbering fucker. This is the correct way to behave when, despite your own flagrant lack of talent, the scotch dullards keep voting you in to the detriment of the lovely Penny Lancaster Stewart. You back out with dignity, you do not go on to stomp around in a kilt and call it a paso Doble.

Sorry to see JS go, mind, but the public usually see sense eventually (unless they are being partisan, yes Scotchland, I'm talking about you!)

ETA: sorry I seemed to have meandered into a Faux letter, well a faux fishwifing, really. sorry.

Well to be fair to JS, I don't imagine he expected to get this far, so booking in a commitment later on in the series probably wasn't such a dreadful idea ?

I don't think I'd be too cynical about it. He doesn't strike me as someone who's done it purely for the publicity.

Am loving gnt's fishwifery too ?

You are of course absolutely right. There's just something about reality TV / celeb competitions that throws me into cynic mode ?

I saw / heard / read (?) a comment from him early on that he had been offered things like this and was too 'serious' at the time to take them -and this time just thought 'sod it - it'll be a laugh' (I may be paraphrasing there!) - and he just came across really well.

With celebrity jungle wotsit, I put Esther Rantzen in the same category - thinking what the hell, fun / personal development.

I would go in the jungle for the weight loss alone - and as they're way past Z List now, I may be asked next time round ?

Definitely agree about Esther Rantzen - I rather admire her for it.

MrMG watches it (he calls it 'Celebrity' for short, I call it 'Nonentity' ?) so I have seen some bits. I have to say I felt very sorry for her crying yesterday about her husband's death, when the younger girls were talking about their soulmates. It was very genuine.

I don't watch it but I've seen her talking about him before and it's been incredibly moving. She did that series where various slebs were learning french and she was talking about him then - and I think she was Trinny and Susannah'd at one point too. He was clearly her rock and being left without him has been very hard for her.

Gosh - I'm listening to the judges on SCDITT. They're now saying that he's wimping out and he didn't have the balls to carry on. Seems the poor guy was damned if he did and damned if he didn't.
