Knitting is great. I have only just taken it up myself and started making a blanket for my cat.... That way if it is cr@p nobody can complain Smiley winking

I'd go with crochet. I found it so much easier than knitting.

I'd love to knit though, i'm going to give it another go after Christmas.

I think crochet is easier although I'm rubbish at both!

I am biased as I can knit but I can't crochet although I would like to. Just to throw another throught into the mix a couple of years ago OH bought me some cushion kits. I cross-stiched the fronts and then backed them into cushions.

    I made these.

Oh I love these! I do some cross stitch (birthday cards, xmas cards and some geeky video game stuff) but haven't seen the cushion kits before! Think one may have to go on my xmas list! Anywhere in particular you get them from?

I'd start a bit slow to get to grips with what you choose, otherwise you might grow annoyed and frustrated and give up to soon.

For knitting, I'd recommend you do a scarf, is quite easy and they can be really pretty.

For crochet, a table doily is always a great start!

Good luck, let us know what you make Smiley smile

Blankets/scarves/cushion covers will be the easiest to start with, just to get used to the stitches. Then the world is your oyster. Crochet is ace for decorative things - like big roses for hats/brooches/corsages.

Do you have small/medium/big hands? I have fairly smallish hands and find size 4 just about right. I can mange a size 3 but it winds me up (also, your creation doesn't get very big very quickly). I can happily use up to a size 6; anything bigger starts to ache. I made a blanket with a size 12 once and that was ludicrous.

For starters, just buy some basic double knitting acrylic (look for the right needle gauge on the wrapping). You want to stick with relatively smooth threads; do not buy anything that looks fuzzy, or anything that isn't stretchy (e.g. cotton thread). King Cole DK is really nice to work with (for a basic wool).

Crocheting is bloody brilliant. I find it very relaxing because you can knock something up pretty quickly, so it's less frustrating then knitting. Generally I use a size 4 hook and find that's fine for all the basic wool types I've picked up so far.
