Just engaged!!!

krebecca, 29 October, 2012 at 14:11 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hello all. I'm new to the forum as my now-fiance proposed to me last night Smiley smile Eeep! We're not going to announce it until his parents are back from abroad (in a couple of weeks) and we've had the ring re-sized. It's killing me already keeping it in, so I thought I'd tell some strangers online for now!! Smiley smile Doesn't quite seem real whilst noone knows.

On the subject of the ring, any idea how much it should cost/how long it should take to get made smaller? Also, I'm thinking I might wear my engagement ring on my middle finger, as it won't look right on my ring finger - it's 5 diamonds in a row and the setting is a bit wide for the ring finger, and I don't think that bit can't be re-sized. I'm fairly sure this is rather unconventional, but I don't mind that. Out of interest though, has anyone else done it, or does everyone wear both rings on the ring finger?

Thanks Smiley smile

    Welcome!

It should be free to get your ring re-sized if you take it to where you bought it in the first place. I'd be very surprised if they tried to charge you and would question them!

As for what finger, I wear both my ER and WR on the conventional finger. I'd find it odd not to, but I guess there are no hard and fast rules so do what you like. Be prepared for everyone to ask why though!

Huge congratulations. Make sure you give us a flash of the ring ?.

Try it on once resized and you might feel differently. As porkchop said, it should be free from the shop you got it from unless it's been passed through the family?

    Welcome! And congratulations!

Not sure on having it resized etc but just wanted to say about the ring finger thing... Try it on your engagement finger for a week or two first. It my feel like it's digging in or too thick for that finger but it will feel like that at first as you're not used to wearing a ring on that finger!

If it was me I wouldn't feel engaged with the ring on a different finger, and I was always quite proud to flash my engagement ring, especially on a night out to put off over-eager guys! Don't worry about how it might look, I'm sure it looks fine on that finger! xx

    Congratulations!

I personally couldn't imagine wearing my ER on any other finger. (plus it wouldn't fit!)

Would you have your ER on the middle and then your wedding band on the ring finger?

Do whatever you find comfortable once it has been resized.

    Hello & congratulations!!!

Mine had to be made smaller & it took two & a half weeks to get back! Not sure if it's a Tiffany thing or the fact I'm a quarter size, but it sure was a looong wait to have it back. xx

Thank you all very much for your congratulations! Smiley smile The ring is an antique one, from my fiance's family. We went in to a jewellers and paid to have it re-sized today. For future reference, if anyone's interested, it cost £45 (and another jeweller quoted £40 so that seems average). And they said it should take just over a week. I decided to get real and wear it on my ring finger! The setting is a bit wide, so I thought it just wouldn't look right on my ring finger which is skinnier than the middle finger, but the jeweller said the way it is re-sized will improve that a bit. It would have driven me mad constantly explaining that it was in fact an engagement ring, and it would have looked weird if I have the wedding band on the next finger.

Can't take a picture now it's at the jewellers, but it's similar to this one (if the picture displays right). I'll share a pic when I get it back.

That is so pretty- please flash yours when you have it safely on your finger!

Did you know it was a family ring or was that a suprise??

It was a surprise. I kind of wanted to pick out the ring with him, as I'm going to wear it for the rest of my life so I want to like it! (We had talked quite a lot about getting engaged) But he surprised me with it and I'm so glad as I absolutely love it! I like that it's got some history to it.
