Just found out I'm not Church of England...

leni, 23 August, 2009 at 17:45 Posted on Planning 0 6

Been to church tonight to hand in our banns paper and stayed for the service. Because I was the one of the 2 people in the congregation, the vicar started talking to me and asked if I was christened, I said yes but my church has been demolished now for a NHS walk in centre. They asked where and it turns out I'm a Methodist! My mum has always told me I was church of England but now it turns out I'm not! Does this mean a great deal? The vicar (female and very Vicar of Dibley "no, no, no, yes" ish) said she wouldn't hold it against me. But I'm a little narked that I thought I was a Church of England.

    I dont think it matters.

I'm not even christened and got married in a church which we dont even attend so... mind you, Ingerlund church rules might be certainly different to ours....

Better to be Methodist; much nicer! ? CofE won't marry you if one of you hasn't been christened, Methodist will. CofE won't marry divorcees, Methodist will. I could go on. ?

Seriously though, makes not a jot of difference, and your minister has already said it's not a problem so there's nothing to worry about.

    Hi

It is actually the same thing - both churches are denominations of the Christian church both Baptise children into the Christian church, at the end of the day it's exactly the same. The values of both denominations are exactly the same, just the way they worship is slightly different but to be honest these days you can hardly tell them apart, the differences were much clearer 2 or 3 hundred years ago when the Methodist church began as an off-shoot of what is now called the Church of England.

Often when people are asked their religion they answer CofE or Methodist, Baptist or whatever but actually this is wrong as they all follow the same religion which is Christianity - these are just branches of the same religion.

I am a life long Methodist and if I go to a CofE wedding or baptism these days they are pretty much exactly the same - in fact we got married in the Methodist church where I go but had the CofE ceremony as my husband's brother is a CofE vicar and took part in the service.
