Just got engaged

frantastic, 22 November, 2011 at 16:04 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hello Everyone, I've just got engaged and my friend recommended I join this to help plan the wedding. I'm due to be her bridesmaid in September 2012 so she is really helping with loads of suggestions - phew!!

I've just seen the checklist on what needs to be done and I feel the fear of the year ahead.

Martyn and I plan to get married in Somerset in November 2012 so we're just looking at venues, rings, colour schemes etc.

If anyone has any tips on where to start then please feel free to help us out with this.

? Congrats & welcome to hitched. I'm an old married now but still addicted to the site so tend to lurk more often than not ?.

Me and Husband had 1 year of planning and found that the earlier you get things booked the better. For me the hardest was church / venue / cars / photographer as these tend to get booked in advance by brides to be.

To help me I did my own budget planner on excel and listed everything down that would be needed with dates I paid deposits and when final balances were due. To know what needed to be done I used the hitched list and went from there.

Your in the right place for advise and help though and planning is great fun ?

We had talked about using excel to plan it all, when I feel brave enough to look at the checklist again I'll definately sort that out.

I'm thinking the venue is the key to it all and then I'll know the right dress, colour scheme and all will come from that.

Once we had booked our church and reception all the rest kinda fell into place. I went for chocolate / champagne / ivory / cream colour scheme which turned out lovely for my October wedding. Google images really helped me too, I used to print out pictures of what I liked to take them to my florest / cake lady so they knew the kind of thing I was looking for. Also don't worry about the smaller details of the day as trust me your guests really do not notice.

    Hello, welcome and congratulations!

Few tips I could give you:

    * Don't make any decisions without thinking about them. Especially things like people in the wedding party ie bridesmaids, ushers etc.

    * When it came to colour schemes, I thought about the ones I liked and then put them into google to get lots of ideas which I often printed out.

    * Write lists!! I had lists coming out of my ears for everything that needed to be done, for the last 4 months I have 4 A4 sheets of lists up on my cupboards which I ticked off when things were done.

    * Have lots of fun! Enjoy the planning as well as the actual day. We did a lot of things ourselves and it really made a difference because it meant we sat down together and had some lovely time just us.

    * Get hints, tips, ideas and recommendations off everybody (especially off here) but try to do things your own way

    xx

Welcome to hitched! I can second whats been said about don't rushing into decisions about bridesmaids etc!! Really think about things and compare different options to make sure you deffo want what you decide on and wont think 2 months on - damn wish I'd gone for it and had that...- Enjoy the whole thing, a couple of times it can get over whelming and complicate but most of the time its great fun ;-)

Welcome!! First thing to start with is the venue as everything else will depend on that! And most of all, just enjoy the planning! I had a stressy couple of weeks after getting engaged as I managed to freak myself out but best to just sit back, relax and make sure you enjoy it! Oh and ignore most things that people say!!! Everyone has got something to say or suggest!! Do it for you and your OH!!!!!
