Just had my Wedding Ring Appointment :'o(

avintagebride, 2 February, 2011 at 21:14 Posted on Planning 0 16

My 2nd appointment with Smooch. My ER is awkward so I need a 'finger fit' which basically means bespoke, so it will fit and match the style.

I love what they have in mind, unfortunately it is just too out of budget. I'm dreading telling her as she has been so nice and helpful looking at what they can do, as at first they didn't think they could do it.

Just feeling sorry for myself! [:'(]

I can recommend a brilliant and reasonably priced jeweller in London if you need one...

I felt like that about one of our travel agents when booking the honeymoon, she did a lot of legwork but just couldnt match another's prices so we had to go with them...

I'm in Teesside, waaaaay up North but thanks Mrs C. There is so much more choice down South! There are hardly any independent jewellers in my area. Looks like I'll have to get myself up to Newcastle, which is about 45 minutes away.

Or try desperately for an off the shelf ring that fits!!! (Highly unlikely)

Hope you find what you want in budget Laura - have you looked at wedding rings direct? They appear quite cheap but not sure of quality etc.

    Thanks x

That's such a shame Laura, I wish I could do something to help ☹️

Please, please, don't feel bad about it though. It's our job to help design your ring, if you don't like it, or it doesn't fit into your budget, it's not a problem. We will either go back to the drawing board, or wish you the best of luck in finding what you need.

I'm sure you'll manage to get something. Maybe you could try a few antiques shops? You never know, youmight find a little gem (no pun intended!)

    Laura x

Sorry I can't help other than to say I feel your pain. When i was buying my fiancee's engagement ring I had it custom made. So glad I had a good designer she taught me so much including how to make sure a WR would fit!

Really didn't know how much went into rings, I have new found respect for all the talented makers!

    Good luck in finding somebody.

    Alex

Smooch staff are really understanding & helpful (well the woman we had was) so im sure they will understand.. maybe they could try & do something to make it more inline with your budget if you tell them... what shape is your ring?

Laura, why don't you try to find an independent jewellery maker? I don't want an ordinary wedding ring. I know a jewellery maker, so she is making my ring for me. If you go into some kind of jewellery gallery that has jewellery by lots of different desgners, they will be able to put you in touch with one of the jewellers who will be likely to make it. My ring is certainly going to be cheaper - the only one in the shops that I have found that I liked was £850. I think my handmade, bespoke, beautiful ring will be about £300!!!

I think there are a few around, Try bramwells in darlington.

Im just trying to think about some more, there is a guy in middleton st george who runs twelve central hair dressers (alan) who custom makes rings for people.

I will see if i can route a few more for you today.

Laura, ask around your friends and family, one of them may know a good jeweller. I saw an excellent one my Aunt recommended to me. He came to my mum's house and the service was excellent. We re-used old family rings to make new ones for me and h2b. I can't really reccommend him to you as he is in Stoke.

The cost of this? £80 for both! Bargain! They are both LOVELY.

I am sure that the Smooch rings are very nice etc, as eveyone here raves about them but they are too expensive for me.

My ER is an odd shape, I didn't like the shaped wedding rings, so the jeweller adapted my ER to fit (he took a tiny nick of metal out of the setting so that it sits on top of a plain wedding band)- this was including in the £80 price and he re-sized the ER for me too!

If I were you I would check out the independent jewellers in your area and get some quotes. They are much cheaper than the chains.

    :-)

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions everyone

Here is my ER. It's a wide set octagon. 2mm band but widens to 3mm at the front.

I think that whatever wedding band you have you are not going to see it..... personnally i wouldnt go for one to fit around the shape but one slim enough to fit underneath the oval nearest my finger joint......

I've tried that Teehee. It looks odd because the bottom of the octagon sticks out so far from the band of the ring, the wedding ring looks miles away from the ER's band, if you get me?

I love your ring! I honestly think you should take it to a local jewellers and see what they suggest. They will be cheaper!

Also see if it is possible to remove a little bit of the ER setting underneath so that it fits ON the WR (if you have lot of setting it will be possible without weakening it).
