Just out of interest - Bonuses

Crantock, 16 March, 2009 at 10:34 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 25

For those that get annual performance-related bonuses, what kind of percentage of your salary do you get?

I work in IT within the financial sector and have just received notification of mine. This post is by no means a moan or rant, I'm grateful to have a secure job in the current climate, and any bonus is...well... a bonus ?. I'm just curious as to how my company stacks up against the industry standard.

Thanks.

In my old company it depend on your performance appraisal rating. A rating of 1 meant you could get between 7.5% and 10% bonus (I usually got 10% from my boss).

    A rating of 2 meant a bonus of between 5 - 7.5%

A rating of 3 was not guaranteed a bonus - manager's discretion and depending on pool of bonus - but was a flat 5%.

My bonus this year would have been nearly 21% of salary had we not folded. Due to working on the exec floor - usual bonuses much lower than that. Those asked to stay on were given a proportion of what their bonus was expected to be as a retention incentive.

H works in Food Manufacturing, and gets 12% of his annual salary if they hit all their targets. Not sure if he will still get that this year though

We are given targets that we need to achieve over the year. If we reach all targets we get 100% of the bonus. Half targets equal 50% and so on.

The last bonus received was 45% of salary. The year before was 40% and 30% the year before that.

My "guideline" bonus is 25% (in house legal). It's not guaranteed - and depends on company and individual performance. The actual bonus awards can vary from 0% to 40%, so a very wide element of discretion!

We only get yearly here in lowly support. We're not fee generators so we don't matter to anyone [:'(] (would love to see how they all react if we suddenly disappeared though...)

We definitely get nowhere near 45%. Or even 20%

Same here, the fee earners claim all the glory but it's the secretaries that hold this place together!

Here bonuses are at the partners' discretion - this year they used their discretion and gave us nothing. So no bonus and no payrise. ☹️

Still I'm happy to be in a job so am not grumbling.

Can I just add we didn't get a bonus last year, nor a payrise and it's definitely the same for this year. We've had to make some redundancies ☹️

I work for a software house - our bonuses are related to our pay grade, but to give you mine as an example (I'm a team leader). I get a 'firm profitability' bonus of 12% paid monthly, and then an annual performance bonus of 15% (to get 100% of which I have to meet all my objectives and competencies - if I don't meet all of these, I would get 85%, 75%, 50%, 25% or nothing, depending on how many I failed to meet).

Our bonus levels are in the process of being set for 2009-10 though, and we've already been warned that they're not going to be as high this year.

We have several different targets to hit and levels of bonus depending on how far you exceed the target. Their is no maximum in terms of salary percentage really , but I don't think anyone ever gets more than 50% , and mostly around 10-20%. Having said that we are paid bonuses in March and we haven't heard anything yet this year. This is for the sales team btw.

We could in theory get 2.5%! But have never known it to happen. My OH can get a max of 5%, if he exceeds his targets, normally 2.5% if on target. Can't beleive how big some people's bonus's are!!

I got a bonus equating to 5% of my salary just before Christmas, a reward for the difference I'd made to the company since I was employed last Feb. For our company, a bonus isn't guaranteed every year.
The bonus was a nice surprise, however we had discussed annual pay rises at interview, which hasn't happeded yet, so I need to approach them about that now. I felt that in a way, the bonus I was given was possibly intended to keep me quiet about asking for my salary review, hoping for an additional 20%

It would work out about 4% I think, but my company don't do it that way or work it out in a logical fashion. I also got a 5% payrise for which I'm extremely grateful, although I'm still paid about £10-15K less than all the other people (male) doing the same job as me.

I've had bonuses precisely twice in my life - £2,500 departmental bonus when I worked in the City circa ****, and £1,000 bonus in 2003 for bringing a major project to completion.

    But that's it.

Ours works on a points system. All managers get 1500 points, deptuties get 900 and cant remember about other staff.

Last year I got £300 which is not to be sniffed at but by the time the tax man had his share [:'(]

My bonus due end of April which is nice as we are not getting an anual pay rise which is to be expected.

Our bonus policy has been the same for the UK office for at least the last 8 years (as long as I've been there). It's a combination of grade (gives you a base percentage) then that's multiplied by your personal rating for the year and the company's rating given by the board. It's a big international FMCG company, I happen to work in the IT dept but other than the sales people who have a separate scheme, everyone is on the same incentive system.

My target bonus is about 14% I think once all the elements are multiplied together (both you and the company are expected to exceed average ratings and I'm sort of in the higher ranks of non-management so in the middle range although I know the amounts rise sharply in the upper levels as my H is 3 or 4 grade higher than me). I believe the part of the company which affects my bonus is doing pretty well this year so I'm hoping they may overachieve and while I do usually get more than the expected rating I'm not convinced I will this year because of the things I happen to have been working on haven't really gone to plan.

I'm not sure if they'll change the system for next year as it's been the same for so long, especially as it can be controlled fairly easily by giving lower company or personal ratings if they want to. I don't expect payrises to be that high this year.

Ha - just had a meeting about our bonuses for 2009-10. For my grade, the firm profitability bonus is reduced from 12% to 4.8%, and the performance bonus is down from 15% to 7.5%. Although they have said they'll review the firm's performance after 6 months and will pay out more if we're doing better than expected.

    So there you go.

Edited for repeated mis-typing of 'performance'.

I got just under 8% this year which was an improvement on last year when I got just under 6%. I work for an investment company and although they are doing fairly well at the moment, all things considered, I really wasn't expecting much at all so was pretty pleased. It's discretionary and they say it's dependent on your appraisal but that's a load of bull because they'd decided on the amounts before we'd even had our appraisals. No payrises for anyone this year though, they've been scrapped.

My bonus is my salary at the end of each month. ?

I didnt think many companies did bonuses anymore. Maybe it is just the companies where we stay.

Well H is in IT in the city and we are waiting to hear about his bonus. Last year he had only been there for about 8 months and got about 14% of his annual salary and apparently would have got nearer 25% if he had been there the whole year.

This year they seem to be trying to prepare everyone for lower bonuses although they appear to have traded well, have no financial issues and are actually more profitable this year than last. H normally finds out before 25th March.

Different situation in that mine is a media company. this year we get 5 per cent of our salary, which is considered really good. some years it's been 2 per cent.some years nothing.

I'm just grateful to get one at all, it's the first place I've ever worked that gives a bonus.

I'm an accountant and havent had a bonus in my last 2 jobs so covering 8 years.

My H is an IT manager and does get a bonus but isnt a set % - its just what they feel like paying. This year he's been told 1% payrise but hopefully bonus will be unaffected.
