kennel cough advice please

chuckie egg, 15 October, 2008 at 10:46 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

Please can anyone tell me what treatment they would expect for kennel cough. My first instinct is to say no to antibiotics as it is a virus, are there any experts out there who know?

thank you

We re-homed a dog about 5 weeks ago and she came with anti-biotics for the kennel cough she had caught there.

There can often be bacterial infection along with the virus, hence the antiBs. Other treatments can be cough suppressants (expectorants aren't really recommended for dogs because they don't know what to do with the coughed up phlegm) and broncho-dilators (sp?).

Just to say, I'm not a professional expert/ vet, but I have dogs/ have had lots of dogs and have sadly had to deal with KC before. If a vet which has examined your dog is advising you that it needs antiBs, I'd be inclined to believe them over what somebody off the internet says tbh, however well qualified.

Hello Our dog had kennel cough a couple of months ago and the advice we were given was to give him benylin (don't think i've spelt that right) but within a couple of days it was gone Smiley smile We gave him a capful every few hours - he really liked the liqourice flavour that we gave him, but didn't really like the flavour the mother in law gave him lol Smiley smile)

We've given benylin too in the past, but you need to very careful that you're giving the correct kind. Ask the vet!

Thanks again everyone. Vet has given me antibiotics and anti-inflamatorys, she said my dog is probably getting better but my *** is just starting with it. I feel like a rubbish owner, my dog has been coughing for about 3 days and I just though he has eaten a stick, kept opening his mouth to have a look. Then this morning it occured to me it was kennel cough, what a fool I am. Ah well they will be better soon.

If it's any consolation my mum's dog has it too, she's been to the vets tonight after it came of v suddenly in the last 24hrs (we thought it was a bit of stick too at first). Anyway the upshot is that the vet thinks I gave it to the dog. ☹️ I had had a bad cold and chest infection for the whole of the three weeks that I was dogsitting and spent most of the time curled up on the sofa with a cuddly chocolate lab, now it appears the poor thing has caught my bug.

Hope your pooch is on the mend soon. x
