Kidney infection

allthatglitters, 30 May, 2008 at 10:25 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

I feel rough. Ive been off work since wednesday with a kidney infection and I still feel terrible. Back ache, tummy ache, throwing up, dizzy. The doc gave me anti-sickness tablets and told me it was period pains. But when I had a little rant and said I know what period pains are and this was NOT them, she said said it must be an infection. I feel so poorly (feeling sorry for myself) I can't eat anything apart from dry toast and I don't even want that :-(

What else can I do to make it go away? I want to cut them out with a carving knife but H said that isn't the best plan.

H is feeling guilty as I rang NHS Direct wednesday and they said I should have gone to A&E during the nigt as I was close to passing out but H said I would be ok

I take it you are on antibiotics? Did you provide a sample? If you arent feeling better after having 48 hours of antibiotics I would assume they arent working. Unfortunately you wont get your urine results back until next week now.

I feel your pain. I had a kidney infection over the weekend - it really, really hurt! but it cleared up very quickly with antibiotics - in about 6 hours the pain had pretty much gone (though that may have been down to the nurofen plus I was taking too).

? Hope you feel better soon.

No, she wouldn't give me any ?as she said I should go and drink plenty of water and it would 'pass'. The anti sickness tablets worked as I was sick just after I had them but haven't been again. I did give a sample but she just tested it to see if I was pregnant.

I feel for you I really do, my first year at uni I had one every 3-4 weeks and ended up in hospital. They are horrible things.

I really would have thought you'd have had antibiotics, but if they haven't given you any just try and stay warm, sleep lots and drink plently. ?

I found a hot water bottle really helped with the pain, that and nurofen plus.

A kidney infection just does not 'pass'.

I've had water infections before (uncomfortable), kidney infections (painful but bearable with painkillers), and a kidney stone (agony and ended up on morphine for the pain).

I've be shouting for anti-b's as the pain will only get worse. Trust me!

    I definitely agree with this.

I couldn't even walk when I had a kidney infection (it was a bad one, but then my kidneys are damaged unfortunately ?).

The doctor will be able to give advice over the phone, and make a judgment call as to whether to come to you, or get you to go to him.

Hope you feel better soon xx

If you are still not right this evening, you get yourself to A&E. The longer you leave it, the more it will take hold if you are not careful. They make you feel absolutely wretched. You have my hugest sympathies.

    I can't believe the doc didn't give you anti-bs.

Put your feet up and let H look after you. including taking you to A&E if necessary!

Can you drop off a sample and get a telephone appointment? They should be able to do a dip test for nitrates (nitrites? cant remember which) which indicate bugs present.

Hope you're feeling better soon. I've had a kidney infection and had to have antibiotics. It wouldn't have improved otherwise. I was in agony at work and went into my bosses office and burst into tears asking to go home ? Not my finest hour but seeing as it was a bloke he just looked uncomfortable and nodded and I fled from his office.

Sadly the antibiotics were so strong they ended up giving me thrust so went from one problem to another ☹️

Hope the next Dr you see is more sympathetic. OK water infections can pass if you drink lots of cranberry etc but not kidney infections. Am quite narked on your behalf.

Yup, definitely get yourself to another doc. Three days with a kidney infection is no fun at all - it's *not* like cystitis and will not pass on its own. Sorry you're suffering, they're horrid things but whenever I've had them the correct antibiotics usually sort itf within half a day.

    Hi

Shocked that you weren't given any antibiotics - kidney infections, as someone has said, do NOT just pass. I am nearly 8 months pregant and have had 2 infections so far and got given antib's each time, so there's no excuse for not giving you any if they'll dole them out to the likes of me! Just try and keep as much liquid down as possible - prefereably water but I find that when I am poorly, water makes me worse and a very weak cordial can help. Try and eat a little but as long as you stay hydrated, the appetite will return when it's ready. Ice lollies maybe?

When you're a little stronger, try the cranberry juice - not sure whether it works in terms of flushing out infections but the sugar will start getting you back to your old self.

Hope you're feeling better soon. Kidney infections are just soul destroying.

    Jas
