kids food

chicken82, 26 March, 2009 at 10:57 Posted on Planning 0 22

Just wanting your oppinions...

We are only catering for 3 kids at the wedding breakfast, 2 our our kids and 1 is our nephew.

We have the choice of giving them exactly what we are all having at half portion and half price, or picking them their own 3 course meal from the kids menu for ANOTHER £7 cheaper.

Although money is important, it is only £21 different if they have what we have...

anyway, we decided to go with kids meal stuff just so it looks more appetising to their young eyes, and easier to eat. We were told they could just have a standard chicken roast dinner which we were gonna have, but its not listed! - i have just recieved the kids menu in the post and i honestly dont think any of it is suitable for a wedding! - or for our kids. They have requested that all 3 have the same thing...

starters

nachos with CHEESE salsa and sour cream (my eldest cant eat cheese)
tom soup (far to messy shame cuz they like this)
garlic bread with optional cheese (a bit poor dont you think for a starter?)
melon with raspberry sauce (i know my 2 boys wont eat this)
potatoe wedges with melted CHEESE and bbq sauce (cheese again)
bowl of fresh leaves with optional dressing (my youngest wont eat lettuce - plus, its pretty rubbish i think)
carrot cue and pepper sticks with mayo (again, just really poor option imo)
crisp fresh veg sticks (see above!)
main
spag bol (my eldest most fave meal ever but its orange - need i say more?)
sausage and mash (best option i think...)
past with ham and mushroom sauce (unsuitable for a wedding!)
pizza (")
chilli (")
jkt pot with beans or chilli (")
roast chicken and chips and peas (would be fine if with mash or something - i am not having chips in my wedding!)
chicken tagine with cous cous (bit of a risk if they havent had it before)
moussaka (we have this at home, and although they eat it, its not one of their faves)
fried eggs with chips and beans (no no no)
boiled egg and soldiers (and again no!!)
fish sticks and chips (again, why the chips?)
If they have the same as us they would be having a fish rillete (dont think they will enjoy it much, i got 1 who loves fish and 1 who doesnt) And then for main roast beef and yorkshire pud - much better, both boys will eat this. And the pud which comes with it would be fine for them too.
What do you think?

I'm a bit confused by your not suitable for a wedding stance tbh. A child's view of a wedding is much the same as an adults in that its a great day out and a "treat" for the day. So why not just ask the boys what they would like to eat best from that list? (Which is a lot larger than most places would offer).

Also, a bit difficult to advise without knowing what ages the children are.

Maybe ask the caterer if they can do a standard roast chicken dinner as it was mentioned before (even though not on the menu).

In terms of the kids menu maybe you could just ask for one of the starters such as wedges or nachos without cheese for your eldest one.

Personally I wouldn't be too bothered about kids having chips at my wedding. From the mains listed I would probably go for the roast chicken, chips and peas - not too messy and is more like a proper dinner than say the pizza. Or as you say the sausage and mash would also be a good option. Having said that I don't have kids and am not too up on kids meals.

    Good luck.

I think it looks like a really good kids menu! Loads of choice and a variety of healthy stuff, and things kids enjoy eating. Fair enough the extra messy foods may not be a great idea - but its nice that they are offered as spag bol is popular with kids, but presumably you could just take those of the menu? Re the cheese allergy - had you told them about this - and, even if you had, is there any reason why cheese options should not be available to the other kids there?

What do YOU think should be on the kids menu? Work this out - then ask the caterers if they can do those options?!

There's nothing wrong with a good portion on those options IMO, certainly nothing wrong with veg stick type starters (not sure what you think is poor about those sort of options). The biggest problem is the necessity for all of them to eat the exact same thing.

I'm another one who doesn't really understand how you've concluded what's suitable wedding fodder and what's not. Why is sausage and mash suitable but a ham and mushroom pasta not?

I also think you're being overly concerned about the mess factor, you haven't said how old they are but kids are kids. No-one will expect them to stay pristine for the entire day, that would be unreasonable. If it's a big problem and stopping them from eating what they'd enjoy, you could have them change into a special t-shirt/shirt just for the meal or do what I see often and have something special for them to change into after the meal.

    What are the adults eating?

We had melon, followed by pizza, chips and peas, thought that was easier for most age ranges as we had several 2 year olds, the pizzas could be cut up as finger food, and the older kids enjoyed it too. Tomato soup was on our kiddy menu too, can you imagine the mess............!

Basicly, it is a posh venue, with posh food, and i would like my kids to have something nicer to eat than what they would have if they went to a pub.

they are 8 and 2x 3 year olds.

i agree, it is a great kids menu.

Its not a wedding menu, its just what is on offer in the restaurant, hence the choice!

We cant choose anything with cheese, as all 3 kids have to have the same food.

the only thin i think is poor is that it isnt enough - its a bit of nothing! Would you pay for a few carrot sticks? I would want something different, or substantial or a treat.

As far as what is suitable, i would like to keep everything inkeeping with what the adults are having and the venue.

As for the mess, no, i do not expect them to stay pristine for the day, but i can not allow my kids to eat tom soup which staines badly when they are wearing a hired white shire waistcoat and suit.

Kids and soup do not mix well at the best of times.

The adults are having fish rillette (my eldest wont like, my youngest will) and for main is roast sirloin with roast potatoes and veg!! They will both really enjoy this. Pudding is a white choc torte, so again they will like it. Im not concerned about them eating the same, its more the way it will be presented that is making me wonder if it will put them off.

I understand that, but sometimes posh food and kids just don't mix. For a long time I wondered why a friend of mine would buy fillet steak for her and her husband and the kids would be having sausages - truth is, its better to give them foods they like and they will eat than something you're having or "posh" that will be pushed around the plate and wasted.

I think perhaps you need to go back to your venue with some suggestions of your own, see if they can accomodate those. What do you think you want the children to eat?

I think it looks a really good Kids Menu with a lot of choice whcih would cover most tastes and it is a Kids Menu not a Wedding Menu.

If both you children would enjoy what the main menu is( apart form starter) wouldnt it be easier just to take the half portions on offer so they will have the same as the adults if you feel the other food isnt special enough. Or maybe I have missed something as have obny quickly read this !!

Alternatively, if its the starter that's causing the problems, what is the vegetarian starter? Could they have that?

Carrot, cucumber and pepper sticks as a starter? Yes I would pay for that, it's healthy, it's not the main course and if it was something the kids would like then no problem.

As for kids and soup - I have a 4 year old, he eats soup, gets a bit on his face, the occassional drop on his clothes. I'm not saying that tomato soup is a great idea but you're rejecting their healthy, totally mess free options because they're not posh/weddingy enough but rejecting the weddingy options because they're too messy, or contain cheese or they won't eat it. AND rejecting the options that fall inbetween. It's their restaurant kids menu so of course not everything is going to be entirely suitable but I think it's an incredibly well balanced menu all the same.

Re. staining hired clothing, I did suggest a change of clothing but I get the feeling you have an absolute vision of how everything should be/look, so I guess this would be a no no.

The problem seems to be that you have quite a number of varying objections, which makes for difficult catering.

If only one child wouldn't eat the starter, why can't they just have half portions of the adult menu and provide the one child with a starter chosen from the kids menu or the vegetarian starter (presuming there is one)?

I really don't understand your concerns and think you'd be best just having the kids eat the half adults portions if you don't feel the kids menu is posh enough.

I'm providing our kids with kids food because it's what they like and if that includes chips then so be it. If they get posh food then they might not like it and it will be a total waste of money.

What is wrong with chips at a wedding?

Apologies for dimness, but what's a fish rillette (it doesn't sound very nice to me)?

I completely agree with the no chips rule!! Perhaps the potato wedges without cheese might be ok as a starter, but i wouldnt worry too much about it if they will eat the main. Either the roast beef or sausage and mash options seem to be the best bet - can't really go wrong with those!

I agree. I personally don't see anything wrong with it although I can appreciate the posh venue concern. I've been to a wedding before where some of the adults opted for the kid's menu of chicken nuggets and chips! I've been to another wedding where there was absolutely nothing I could eat and would've loved the kids option lol.

If it was me I think I'd go for the chicken chips and peas option, which I think you said the venue had mentioned.

    Wow - that's quite a menu - wish I was coming!

If it was me, I'd give them the carrot sticks as a starter as it only needs to be little.

Then I'd give them the chicken and chips. I know you say you don't want chips, but kids love chips!

I know what you're saying about wanting to give them posh food, but I bet you they won't eat it if it's too unfamiliar!

It all sounds really nice, and I'm sure they'll eat a bit of whatever they have.

I think the adult menu would be fine for them, but if you want to go for the kids menu and don't want chips, why don't you just ask if they can do the roast chicken with either the same potatoes that the adults are having, or mash (seeing as they offer mash on their menu to go with the sausages)?

If they offer a kids menu I'm sure that they are used to fussy children whose parents ask if this can be served with that rather that this... They probably get requests like that every day.

tbh i dont really know what it is and ive tried it!!! Ha ha!

Its like a cold fish thing, served with melba toast. looking it up on tinterweb, it does actually sound quite minging (although i do like pate) but its actually nothing like pate at all. It was more like tuna mayo!!

It was the only part of the menu that me and mrchicken disagreed on - he doesnt like fish, but really liked it, where as i really like fish but actually thought it was too fishy!!!

We are going to go for it though, as it was the best option out of 3 we could have had from our menu choice.

Ok, i have had an epiphany!!!

All thanks to Jacob my almost 8 year old.

I emailed the venue to point out my concerns, and she just suggested i ask my kids what they want - even if its not on the menu, and they will accomadate.

He was totally enthusiastic about both garlic bread and the carrot and cue options. So, i realised it was my issue worrying that it wont be good enough (cus i havent seen it). My head is full of wedding cotton wool at the mo, but not nice fluffy cotton wool, just really old greasy cotton wool. I am panicking over stupid little things.

So, i am letting jacob decide (he is the best man after all!)

His decision is -the kids will have garlic bread, some form of roast dinner or exactly the same as the adults for main, and warm choc muffin and custard for pud. (but i am being awkward and asking for a muffin with no custard!)

just waiting for confirmation back from the venue.

Just for the record, i have no problems with chips at a wedding. I actually would have really liked steak and chips for my wedding breakfast - but it wasnt on offer.

Feel better now its sorted. Sometimes you just need to take a step back and take a look through a childs eyes.

    And chill.........

Have had my reply from the venue (they are good i have to say, it only took 5 mins)

And the chef will do roast chicken with veg and potatoes, muffins with or witout custard, and she is going to check with the chef about how the starters are presented so i can choose either garlic bread or the veg depending on which will look nicest!!

I have to say my wedding co-oridinator is fab. Smiley smile
