Kitten always eating

Hawhaw, 17 October, 2008 at 11:24 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

We have two 18week old kittens, one male and one female.

The male is constantly searching for food, when we're eating he tries to take food off our plates, even though we though we never give him our food.

We found him eating brocolli waiting to go out into the compost heap last week.

The kittens have half a tin of wet food each morning and we have been leaving dry complete food out all the time. They always have water down, (one fresh and one a couple of days old as they prefer that)

Should we be restricting what he eats? He has a much round stomach than his sister, but I do think that once he goes out in the spring that'll be run off.

    Have you wormed them?

They are supposed to eat little and often when they are small, it might not be a problem (yet) Our cat is a little older but will always try to eat off our plates, but I doubt she'd try brocolli, only the guinea pigs eat that!

Yes, the nice and now scratched vet did that a couple of weeks ago when I took them in for their injections.

Does he search for the food for some sort of play activity? Do you have things to amuse him with? Our cat eats more and is more naughty when shes bored

I don't know if this will help, but when we first took in our second cat, he was 14 weeks, and came from a terrible background. Long story short, he was starved and allowed to grow feral(!) First few months, he just hoovered up anything remotely edible and got distressed at feeding time when he thought we may not feed him (we have another, older cat).

He is much better now, and (fingers crossed) has stopped trying to bury his food in the kitchen, but he does need at least 3 meals daily. Would you be willing to consider upping the canned food to twice daily and putting out less dry food? Might this help?

Oh that's interesting, his mum was feral although the kittens were born at the RSPCA place. I'm wondering if it's a learned behaviour from her, they were with her until they were 10 weeks.

We could give the increased wet food a chance and see if that works, he does a funny little growing thing when eating wet food.

Our cat (now 11) had a similar start in life to yours, feral mother etc. He still needs to eat little often, usually four small meals a day (7am, 12pm, 5pm and 9pm) but would still eat more if we offered it.

I know you've mentioned worming, but just to say that you should worm again in a couple of weeks, usual worming program is every 2 wks until 12 wks of age, monthly till 6 months of age and then every 3 months.

I Would say you might want to take him to the vet to just check.

I found this do you think it might help (or at least stop him scavenging?)

Zoe , He has loads off toys, and his sister to play with, we give all the cats loads of attention.

Mrs M, I think we will have to start taking the dry food away and giving them set feeding times.

Dove, thanks we'll get some more worming tablets at the weekend.

MBK, he has been checked by the vet. I can't see your link as it just goes to the front page.

    Thanks to everyone who replied.

HH its a little ball on the toy section that has a slot that opens a bit and allows food to come out of it.
    £2.49 or something IIRC

Just a note to say the growling thing is just to stop anyone trying to pinch his food.

Do the kittens have a bowl each for their food and their dry food?

A seperate bowl for the dry might help? it might be a psychological thing and knowing he has food might alleviate it?

    Just and idea.
