Kitten homes urgently needed Liverpool

Vanilla Pod, 15 August, 2012 at 17:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 23

Hello,

My friends cat had 7 kittens 4 weeks ago. She was going to keep them the reccommended time and then rehome them. Howver last night some evil scumbag poisoned her lovely girl and the kittens mum Lottie. Lottie has had to be put down at the vets today and the kittens are now without a Mum and need hand weaning. My friend is devastated as are her kids. Her and her husband both work and have 5 children and cant manage to do this themselves.

Here is her FB status from early this morning

"Can anyone help? My cat is seriously ill at the vets and is highly likely going to be put to sleep today. She had kittens four weeks ago and we need to wean them and rehome them quickly to improve their chances of staying healthy. If you'd like to home a kitten or know someone who could, please inbox me

Can anyone help?

Hand rearing is a massive job - the kittens will need bottle-feeding every two hours, all day and all night, and at 4 weeks they might still need their bladders stimulating before they can go to the toilet. Has your friend tried her local rescues? They're all full at the moment but normally reserve experienced emergency fosterers for such a situation. Catchat.org has full lists of all of the rescues in the UK, and a forum filled with people who work and volunteer for rescues. Hopefully someone there could help?

If your friend does find people willing to hand rear please gently advise her to only give the kittens to trusted friends of friends etc. I volunteer for a shelter in the north east and the amount of cats and kittens that are "free to a good home" but end up being used as bait for dog fighting is truly shocking.

Yes of course, that's fine. I can't recommend the people who grace the forum on CatChat enough - they WILL find a way to help and have contacts all over the country when it's an emergency like this.

You're welcome, I hope it helps and that the kittens are sorted soon. Some people are against putting their cats/kittens into rescues because they don't want them to go into a cage, but young kittens like this would go to a foster home and would be snapped up just as soon as they were old enough to be rehomed - the kittens always find homes quickly, it's the older cats that end up hanging around for a while.

Oh, and your friend should have been given a formula from the vet to bottle feed them with - normal milk will make them ill.

I have responded on Facebook but you are too far away. If in doubt take them to the RSPCA?

It could also be worth her dropping Animal Lifeline an email: ****@****************.*** This organisation can often find small independent rescues with space when all of the larger rescues say they are full.

Not so far, she has kept them all herself and has taken time off work for now. Very sad for her own cat though her children are besides themselves. ☹️

If she is struggling then the RSPCA will have foster carers lined up to help if needed, It sounds like she is doing a good job herself though. very sad. xx

Poor children. What a twunt to do that to a cat. Hopefully having the kittens will be helping them a little bit? I hope your friend is managing okay with them. I didn't see anything from her on the CatChat forum (might have missed it though!) - happy to post details if she still needs help?

I only wish I lived closer to help Smiley sad I'd take a few babies to look after without issue. I am so gutted about your friend's cat, how awful. How someone could poison an innocent creature is unbelievable. I really hope that the kittens will be ok, it's a hard graft hand weaning them.

It never fails to make me sick with how vile people can be to animals. I would love to do the exact same punishments to them.

There have been alot of antifreeze poisonings round here lately, plus people kicking cats to death. If someone do that to one of my babies I would kill them.

I feel exactly the same Mini. People who do this to animals are not people, they are scum.

Anti freeze poisonings seem to be on the increase, an animal sanctuary that's local to me has posted on facebook about a lot of areas that have been experiencing anti freeze poisonings, they're advising people to keep their cats indoors.

OH and I were having this exact discussion yesterday. We keep being asked if we will let our boys out. The answer is yes, if they want to after they've been 'done', they can go out during the day when we're at work but come in at night. Someone told OH about a cat who had boiling water poured over them because they kept pooing in someone else's garden. I agree that other peoples' cats pooing in your garden is frustrating, but if you know who's cat it is, wouldn't you try to speak to them first? Instead of maiming or killing their beloved pet? I just cannot understand why people would think it's okay.
