Knitters - where do you get your yarn?

Mrs S Smith, 18 May, 2009 at 10:50 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

Hi all!

I've recently decided to take up knitting again and so far I've made cushions! ?

I keep running out of yarn though, and the only place that I know does a reasonable collection of yarn around here is Dunelm Mill but I still have to pay out about £3.50 per yarn ball..

Can anyone recommend any places online that might be of interest? Obviously I'd prefer to buy in bulk if it's cheaper..

Thanks in advance!

This is one of MrsMagic's suggestion for online buying. It has a good discount section. I have just bought some for 49p a ball.

Have you found the ravelers forum yet for knitters? There is a hitched group. Again, Mrs Magic, is instrumental in that. I joined recently - there's a good few hitchers on there and it's a really good forum.

I second everything Lou-la-belle has said! Kemps is fantastic - some really good bargains in the sale section and their customer service has been really good so far. I've also used McA Direct who were good too but not as cheap as Kemps.

Do join us on ravelry! If you're not a member it takes a few days to process your "invitation" but it's totally worth the wait. We've got a lovely little group going over there.

    Ravelry - www.ravelry.com

The best thing in the world for knitters. I didn't get it at first but my god, it's a mine of information!

Fab! Wow, that site looks... intimidating ?

But I've put in an invite request:

There are 4239 people ahead of you in line. Your invitation should be sent in about 3 days. ? that's one popular site!

I use www.loop.gb.com they are truly fabulous but the yarn they stock is the more expensive end of things so maybe not the placefor you if your looking for bargain yarns.

Another vote for ravelry.com her, I need to get off it an do some work!

It's fabulous. There's a forum board / group for practically everything you could ever want to ask, and there are sections where you can store and share information about your projects, yarn, needles etc. There are zillions of free patterns to go at too, it's bloody marvellous!

I've found it really good to help me with choosing yarn as a new knitter as you can see how other people's projects look knitted up in that yarn, read their comments about it, etc.

Thanks Fionka.. Appreciate the link ?

<aside> where did you get your username from? Is it just based on your own name, or is it something else..?

Oh wow that's what I want, really! I've just seen they have like fingerless gloves pattern, and although I wouldn't want to wear something like that MYSELF, I can think of a fair few people that would ?

Getting a bit excited at the prospect of being able to do something like that now ? would be good for the commute to and from work as well, just sit there and knit away! ?

MIne? Fionka is a nickname and the 261 comes from H's gaming user name! Not very imaginative I'm afraid.

    Ahhh I see!

Sorry, just a complete stab in the dark, but there's a character from a childhood storybook that was called Filli Fionka so I thought I'd find out if you had got inspiration from that.. Sorry for the blatantly bizarre message ?
