Knitting question

Smint, 9 May, 2009 at 21:46 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 10

I've just bought some gorgeous Colinette yarn, but am completely stumped on this in the pattern:

1st row Knit, winding yarn 3 times around needle for each stitch

2nd row k 1 dropping extra loops, *slip next 5 sts onto right needle dropping extra loops, slip same 5 sts back onto left needle, (k5tog, yfwd, k5tog, yfwd, k5tog) all into these 5 sts, rep from * to last st, k1 dropping extra loops

It's the bit in bold I can't work out. Do I knit the same five stitches together, then put them back onto the left needle, yfd, then knit them again and do this three times? If you don't, then you're reducing 20 stitches to 5 which can't be right!

Help! Can anyone interpret?

Thanks

Ah ok think I get it.

On the second row after you've done the first bit. Knit those 5 stitches together, bring the yarn forward and somehow knit through those same 5 stitches you've just knitted through!

I presume putting the extra loops in and then dropping them gives you the wool length to be able to do that.

Oooh, right . . . . I think I might have to practise a bit first! Looks very complicated though!

    Thanks for that

I've looked at it again this morning and I still don't understand it ?

I can understand if you knit into each of the five stitches you've just knitted together and bring the yarn forward, but to k5tog into each stitch three times just doesn't make sense to me!

What are you trying to knit? Do you have a picture?

If you knit all 5 together, turn the knitting around, bring the yarn forward and knit into all 5 again I think you'll end up with a little bobble.

It is awfully complicated, isn't it? I'n sorry I couldn't even start to help you. Have you searched t'interweb for a technique video? there are millions (well almost ?) and are fab as you can actually see what to do.

Are you on Ravelry? It won't help for this particular thing (unless you are still sitting perplexed in three days time) but there really is someone on there (on the techniques board) who will be able to explain anything to you. If you aren't, you should be as it's the best site since, well, ever. ? It has 5000 free patterns, many more from books and to buy, 6 main forum boards and 1000s of others you can join, a notebook which lets you post your projects, list your yarn/needles/books... It really is very good.

It's still in Beta so you need an invitation, currently taking three days, I think. www.ravelry.com and we have a hitched you any hitchers are welcome to join http://www.ravelry.com/groups/hitched-ravelers ?

This is the jacket - Beatrice knittede in Colinette Parisienne

    https://www.colorful-stitches.com/store/DisplayProduct.php?sku=BeatriceW

I wasn't on Ravelry (but I've asked for an invitation now!)

So, turn the knitting round and knit into it again? That sounds promising (and at least makes sense!) In the pic, it looks more like a very open loop than a bobble - but then the wool is very fine and knitted very loosely, so it could be that the repeated knitting into the same five stitches just creates "gathers" at the top of the loop

Thanks Gryfon and Mrs Magic - I think you may have found the answer!

I've read and re read and I'm still non the wiser. I'd definitely recommend Ravelrey ( I think Mrs Magic may be on commission for them ?). I hope you get it sorted soon.
