Lake district hotel recommendations!

Cosmopolitan, 26 January, 2009 at 20:50 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

Watch out, newbie starting a thread!

OH and I are off to the lakes for a few days in March. I preferably want to stay somewhere where I have a view of a lake or will be able to talk a walk along it of an evening without going too far. Spa would be nice to!

Any recommendations?

The Northern Lakes Hotel is nice and has a lovely restaurant and spa, but it's not actually on the lakes, it's a bit further out in Penrith.

We stayed at Linthwaites on our honeymoon. No spa, but great food, a view of the lake (which is a fair way away) and a tarn to walk round in an evening.

I got married at the Lodore Falls Hotel on Derwentwater. Views of the lake and the falls are right behind it. There's a 3 mile(ish) walk into Keswick along the lakeside too. They have a spa and an indoor and outdoor pool (not sure how many days a year you could use the outdoor one though). http://www.lakedistricthotels.net/lodorefalls/. They have some other hotels in the group too.

Try the Hideaway at Windermere, I booked my parents a room for my Dad's 50th and they thought it was gorgeous.

    Thanks Nick,

Linthwaite House looks lovely. Do you know how far a walk it is into Windermere?

I've not yet been to the Lake District but looked at this one and thought it looked nice.

We stayed here http://www.21thelakes.co.uk/ a couple of years back and really enjoyed it. Should be well within your budget I think. They don't have a spa but they have membership of one just down the road so you can have access to the facilities. It's pretty close to Windermere, we walked up the road to a lovely hotel that was on a hill above Windermere for dinner one night (can't remember what it was called unfortunately but if you come out the hotel and walk up the hill you can't miss it!).

I stayed at the Low Wood in the summer and it was a perfectly nice 4* with nice Lake views - (which you can see from the hottub if you lean a bit ?)

The low wood is more like a 3 star tbh. nice reception rooms, awful, tiny bedrooms. linthwaite is streets ahead.

Just to second what Nick says...I stayed at the Low Wood a couple of years ago. It was in the middle of a refurb but there is still a busy main road in between the lake and the hotel. Our lake rview room was noisy and shabby so we moved to a (nicer) room at the back of the hotel which overlooked the staff acommodation for the rest of our stay ?

Service and breakfast was shocking too. Far too expensive and far nicer places to stay imo. We did eat at www.loghouse.co.uk and it was fab (still the same owners too) the owner moved our car for us (obviously we'd had too much wine) from the car park opposite to outside the restaurant overnight so we didn't get charged for parking overnight. Now that's service ?

BIt late to this thread, but we stayed at the Drunken Duck and it was lovely...maybe worth going for a meal if you've already booked somewhere else?
