Large wedding, not in a marquee

HW7, 1 April, 2013 at 18:54 Posted on Planning 0 3

Hi, I have some questions in relation to planning a large wedding, or planning a wedding when you have large families should I say. At a conservative estimate, we're looking at a guest count of between 2 and 300 because we both have large families. Other family weddings that we've been to have had similar numbers but from what I can remember they have all been in marquees and OH is adamant that he will not consider a marquee under any circumstances. So:

Are there really venues out there that will take 300 people for a wedding and won't bankrupt us afterwards? Location is not fixed at the moment, I want to get married in London and he's leaning more towards somewhere closer to Manchester so there should be loads of possibilities but I'm struggling.

Has anyone with a large family successfully narrowed down their guest list and if so what criteria did you use?

How can I negotiate with a partner who is set on having what he wants but won't do any work towards finding it?

I know that the venues around Temple like Inner Temple can handle those kinds of numbers, but I would think they could be expensive...worth a look?

Have you looked at any Asian wedding magazines? It is just a thought because often Asian weddings invite extended family and friends and need very large venues?

I can highly recommend a good old fashioned family rift to instantly reduce numbers ;-)

I think others will have advice on handling your OH so I leave that part to them! ;-)

Getting married in London generally costs ££££ particularly catering for your numbers.

Many of the large central hotels have large 'ballroom' type event spaces that would certainly fit your numbers but possibly not your budget.

Alternatively you could look into stately homes and castles as they tend to have large halls.

Try looking into conference center hotels too, I know there was one in the Gatwick area that would do that number.

Hmm have you told OH basically he can have whatever he wants so long as he finds it? That way he'll either give up his choice or actually get some work done? Make an agreement that say he has to find it before X date, and otherwise you get to then have your turn at finding what you wanted until X date.

For 300 people you want some of the hotels who are used to catering for say Asian weddings, my friend has 400-500 guests in a room that can hold 700!!!

If you want to narrow down your GL, could you take out +1s for a start?
