Las Vegas Grand Canyon helicopter tour - anyone????

charlottelucy, 19 June, 2013 at 13:33 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

Hubby and I are off to Vegas in September and I thought as an anniversary present I would book a Helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon. Has anyone done this? If so who did you book through? There seems loads of companies that do it, I just dont want to be ripped off!

TIA x

I LOVE Vegas!!! Havent done the Grand Canyon, instead we did the helicopter ride over the strip at night.......amazing!

Friends have done the Grand Canyon trip and loved it...........you get set down in the middle of nowhere and have a picnic lunch and an explore. A taxi driver in Vegas who was also a helicopter pilot recommended that we save our money and don't do the day trip, instead spend the night at one of the hotels up in the canyon.

I will find out from my friend who they did their trip with for you.

We used Marverick Helicopters.... flew out to the Canyon over the Hoover Dam, then landed in the bottom of the canyon had a wander about glass of champers and flew back again, down over the strip. Only did a half day tour, and that was enough for us, its worth doing but I wouldnt waste to much time seeing it.

Thanks far2calm, I'm looking at the All American Caynon tour, says it lasts 3.5 hours so will be enough for us as we're only there for 5 days. Can you remember how much you paid?

We did this last year with Sundance. We were picked up in a limo from our hotel, we flew over the Hoover Dam and landed in the Grand Canyon had a picnic lunch then flew back over the strip and dropped back off at our hotel in the limo. It took about 4 hours in total. It was quite expensive but totally worth it!

that's who my friends went with! We also used them for the night tour of the strip.....they must be the main ones over there. Far2calm, it sounds like you did the same trip as my friends.

Oooh, I did this in February!

We went with Papillon Helicopters. It was about 4-5 hours, from 7 am to midday, with a limo transfer either side. We flew out over the Hoover Dam, then into the Canyon and had a short champagne picnic (really don't expect much from the food, it's more just a diversion than anything else...). We flew back over the Valley of Fire and the Strip.

We hired a private charter. It cost $2000 and the tip we gave the pilot. He was utterly fab though, and gave us a running commentary the whole time, about everything we were seeing, historical, social, geological etc. I gather that because of the private hire, we secured the private limo, their best landing area in the Canyon (a private platform to ourselves) and he chucked in the diversion over the Valley of Fire (not normally included). I think the regular price is around $300 but I couldn't imagine being on that helicopter with all the seats taken (we had four people over seven seats) - it would be very crowded and if you were in the middle back, you wouldn't see anything. If you DO decide to share the helicopter on a regular tour, DO NOT book before you go - you'll get it much cheaper on the Strip, where all the companies have people touting for your business.

If I were to be completely honest though, I was a little underwhelmed by the Canyon itself. It's one of those things that soooo fudging big that you simply have no sense of scale. It was really pretty and the helicopter was ace. But as far as scenery goes, it wasn't quite as spectacular as I thought (no hushed sense of being closer to god or anything!).

We also did a jeep trip out to Red Rock Canyon. That was really really lovely. I think I preferred that to the Grand Canyon. Off-roading up in the mountains - fab (and surprisingly green!).

We were there from 28th Jan to 6th Feb, for a friend's 50th birthday. We stayed at the Palazzo. We had nine days of themed fancy dress fun!

Why don't you check out the reviews on trip advisor.............but as Footlong said it may be worth finding out if you can book it cheaper when you are out there

Are you looking at a standard shared tour? Honestly, every ten steps on the Strip, someone tries to sell you a helicopter tour to the Grand Canyon. If you can haggle and are willing to shop around for a day or so, you'll get bargains. The last time one of our party went (shared tour, four hours, picnic etc), she only paid $150.
