Lawn Seed - Help Needed!

Hepburn, 16 June, 2009 at 09:26 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 18

We followed the instructions, raked and forked the lawn, fertilized it and left it for a couple of days before sprinkling over lawn seed and giving it a watering. Have watered it a bit daily but not drowned it....

The pack says you should see sprouts withing 5 days.

Over a week later the seeds on the lawn look dry and dead, no sprouts. Nothing.

We now have half a garden which is unusable and blocked off so the dogs don't get onto the seed but no grass growing.

Has anyone got any ideas?!

TIA

5 days seems pretty optimistic- I'd give it at least another week.

I'm not quite sure about that...it's been years since I planted grass seed.

Perhaps the good ol' BBC can give you some ideas of what the problem might be?

We did this a few years ago and it took about 2 weeks to come up! So, WKS

Thanks both. Will check that link tahdah.

Do you know if the seeds are supposed to look dry and dead?!

Ours is taking ages I think you also need to water it daily and generally love it a lot!

How much of a wtcering would you advise? It's not really rained at all here so maybe we aren't watering it enough?

Is it worth putting the sprinkler on it twice a day for about 15 mins, or is that too much watering?

I'd turf it and get it over and done with - we turfed an area in our back garden and it looks great, the grass has taken and we're now (6 weeks on) treating it as normal. The path we took up and grass seeded is partially bald after 3 lots of grass seed and we're no closer to getting full coverage - I've had it covered in netting and have been watering it regularly but its still patchy

I'm very close to getting that turfed just so it gets filled in soon

We'd love to turf it but the area's quite large and we can't justify the cost at the moment really as it would need digging up, rotavating and then re-laying. It would just cost too much at the moment....

The grass seed is doing my head in though! ?

I've never found turf much quicker, TBH- by the time you can walk on it you may as well have grown from seed.

Also with turf it doesn't blend in so well if you are only doing patches...

I think maybe patience Hepburn!! and maybe chuck some more seed down to make it feel like you are doing something!

Just to reiterate - we put down lawn seed about 3 weeks ago and I was conVINCED we'd done it wrong. After a week and a half it still looked like the seed was just sitting on the earth and there was no way I was going to believe that would be grass at any point.

Fast forward to now and our grass is about 2 or 3 inches tall!!! OK, so it's patchy but that's because we didn't 'distribute' it properly ?

This has comforted me Janjabean! I will persevere and wait and see. It does seem like it's just lying on the soil not doing anything at the moment! Might sprinkle a bit more too as the wind has blown some of it around!

    Thanks ?

How often and how much did you water yours?

I'd pop some more on - admittely the first couple of lots I put down were moved around by the chickens but we've just kept putting more on and there are some patches that are looking good

Don't suppose anyone knows but how do you keep it even if you then have to rake soil over it ? Also should you have most of it covered in soil or is it ok lying on the top ?

Guess this thread is the only group of people secretly hoping for lots of rain rather than a fine few weeks ?

Ah...I like to provide grass comfort! ? So exciting for a new gardener like me!

Well, we watered ours every other day, not enough to flood it but a nice healthy amount. Of course this was when we had that lovely hot week with the occasional shower so it was taken care of by mother nature really.

We put some more seed down on saturday to try and fill in the bald patches but the storm last night washed it all onto the path! So hopefully it will have dried out by the time I get home so I can plonk it back on the lawn and rake it. Mother Nature obviously decided we'd had it too easy so far!

The annoying thing is that because of our dogs we've separate the garden off and only done half the garden in the hope we could then 'swap' and do the other half quite quickly. At this rate it'll get to the end of summer and we'll have half a fab garden and half a *** garden! ?

? I feel your pain. We have a barbeque on the 11th July and my lawn's got alopecia areata!!

Once it starts though (if it's anything like mine) it'll grow very quickly.

I think part of the issue is that I've let the ground get too dry. I'm hunting out the sprinkler tonight!

    Thanks all ?
