Learning sugarcraft? with mini flash :-)

MOMB, 11 March, 2013 at 16:43 Posted on Planning 0 4

I'm thinking of decorating the cake myself (buying some of the pre-iced ones from the supermarket).
I have never done any icing except buttercream roses/glace icing. Never used royal icing, sugar paste, never made sugar flowers. I'd quite like to make lots of hydrangeas with a stamp and stick them all over the cake. Am I taking on too much? I really don't know what I'm taking on....
Thanks in advance

    Hello!

If you have a stamp you should be fine. I started cake making/decorating about 2 years ago and I find if I plan and practice before I start I get pleasing results now.

look at pictures and have a clear idea in your mind of what you want before you start. A silicone rolling pin is really useful for sugarpaste.

having said that I'm having hydrangea flowers in my cake too and it's really not expensive to have it all done professionally if you want to save the hassle/stress in the run up to the day.

I do a lot of sugarcraft these days for cupcakes etc. it's not too difficult one you get the hang of it.

I get my products from Cakes, Cookies & Craft website. You could try using plunger cutters... They are simple to use. Get blocks of SugarPaste and roll thinly. I find the plastic rolling pins coated in a little trex (and worktop coated in it too) stop it from sticking. Also grab a foam pad for the flowers to dry on. Then use edible glue or icing to stick them to cake.

Defiantly look at google/Pinterest etc for ideas and go from there.

    Wow your brave!

I HATE decorating cakes! Took 3 attempts of making my sons 1st birthday cake.

it was fine in the end but I did have a breakdown after launching the second cake after dropping green colouring all over it.

My mum found me mostly green with cake all over her floor crying my eyes out.

All that for a green dinosaur cake!!

practice, practice I say and also have a backup plan.

I decided to do my sisters myself and decided to do my own! I really wasn't very skilled or anything! To take the pressure away and to make it cheaper I iced a dummy cake!! I chose the sizes I wanted and practiced a few times and when I was happy it was sorted then I decorated cuz you could do it months before an not be stressed! Then I made a few normal cakes, not iced to be left in kitchen an cut, worked a treat cuz I wasn't under pressure, decorated them slowly as I had the time! It might give u more time to do the decorating and enjy it!!

I ordered a batch of cutters from ebay to give it a go. It worked really really well: even the children were getting good looking results after a couple of tries. It was such a success in fact that we have decided to change the cake plan: I was intending to buy several fruit cakes as I wouldn't have time to bake but now I will bake one big cake for the middle, and it will be displayed on a drilled tree slice, in which will be standing lots of these: www.allaboutyou.com/food/guide/cake-pop-stands-cake-pops-recipes-2#fbIndex2
