Linens - your opinions please!

SnazzyTrousers, 26 April, 2013 at 16:13 Posted on Planning 0 41

Hi there

Was wondering if I could possibly get your thoughts/opinions?

There's an opportunity that has arisen for me to import the American style wedding table linens. You know, the ruffly, feathery, sparkly, slightly puffy styles that get splashed around the lux event magazines and more famously, on Pinterest!

My question is, would a British market be interested in a more lavish option for table linens than is currently available? I would offer them for both hire and purchase.

Your thoughts on the matter are greatly appreciated - thank you Smiley smile

Thinking about our own wedding and whether they would be something that I would want, then personally for me it would have to be a no i'm afraid ☹️

I can imagine there being some demand, but not a great deal. Perhaps moreso for the fancy chair covers for the bride and groom or just as a one off for a sweetie table or something as opposed to a whole venue thing?

When it comes to sit down meals, table dressing and so on, I think it's still pretty traditional over here.

Not for me I'm afraid. As others say I think there would be *some* demand, but not much in the UK

This, I quite like the idea of using it for a feature table. I would use it for my wish tree table but can't see me using it again.

Ooh I really like this one: http://pinterest.com/pin/119626933822350156/

Not all of the others are my cup of tea, but then a forum like this one really brings home how different everyone's tastes are anyway. I imagine that you'd be ahead of the trend over here and have plenty of people lining up!

    This!

However as a business I think the market might be quite limited as most venues already supply linen or caterers will provide it as part of a food package so could be seen by most as a non essential item.....In comparison to chair covers which lots of people invest in to cover poor quality banqueting chairs I don't feel there is the same issue with tables.

YES from me! I actually love the slightly OTT linen. As a business though and to attract the right market, it would work best combining with other wedding hire products. Perhaps along the same glamorous route of chandeliers, table pieces, furniture hire etc. I would hire the linen in conjunction with something else!

You ladies are fabulous! Thank you all so very much this is so useful for me...

To answer some of your thoughts, I would plan on offering elaborate chair covers too both for regular chairs and the chiavari style. I would also offer chair accessories other than just the traditional sash - for instance - large flowers, ribbons and large rope tassels, to name a few.

The idea about having the linen on a cake table or a wish tree table is an excellent selling point Smiley smile

What i'm wanting to offer is table styling that's totally different to anything you've seen here in the UK. There are so many wedding linen companies in every town in the UK - but - they all offer pretty much the same thing. Which is fine - there is always a demand for the simple traditional. However I really believe there is a market for these elaborate linens. Not just for weddings but for charity/fashion/award type events, etc.

Again - thank you so much ladies Smiley smile

SnazzyTrousers, you can't whet appetites and run ? When are you thinking of introducing these linens and how do interested parties obtain them? Thank you so much for sharing, now my wish tree table........

Haha that would be mean wouldn't it!

I'm planning on getting the whole business together over the next couple of months fingers crossed! I've already been in contact with the manufacturers.

I'm actually a software developer by career (so it won't take me long to set up online at all - bonus). i've been on maternity leave and was due to go back to my job in September but our entire office is being closed (everyone is being made redundant). Sucks to be us! However, i'm taking this opportunity to try and realise my dream Smiley smile

Anyway!! Without rabbiting on - If you PM me (can you do that on this board?) we can swap email addresses and I can let you know when we're ready to rock 'n' roll?

    Thanks! xx

While I'm not sure I would have one at my wedding - I do think there is a market out there, and personally, I think the pics are fab! If I was going to have one, it would probably be for a 'feature' piece - like maybe the cake/gift/guestbook-table. I do agree with you that most hire companies offer the exact same thing - I've been looking at hiring chair covers but get really bored of looking at the same old bows, but these are definitely different!

I think there would be a market for the deep coloured tablecloths but not too sure about the feathery ones. I know we tried all over for black chair covers for our daughter as she wanted black with white and black polka dot sashes for the chair covers and magenta tablecloths with black napkins for the tables. We could only get white chair covers (with black and white polika dot sashes) as most people won't stock black because of the fading through continuous washing. She'd have loved the magenta tablecloths on the same page with the matching flowers in black vases. I think the dark peacock blue with the flocked black swirls on would also be popular.

One thing for sure in the wedding business is that everyone's taste is different and what may be one person's 'Mmm, not really for me' is another one's 'OMG, got to have that!' Quite often, unique and original things get a shock reaction initially but before long, everybody wants one!! I can see a market for them both in the wedding and corporate sector and when you get up and running, do let me know. I'd love to exchange links with you as I'm sure my clients would be interested in them.

    Hi Rainbow Florist

Absolutely! Once my website is up I'll be in touch as it'd be great to swap links and promote each others businesses Smiley smile

And you are absolutely correct - everyone's tastes are so different. I'd like to offer tablecloths for hire too but which ones to buy in bulk? Everyone wants something different haha! So for now it's purchase only Smiley smile ... unless someone needs their whole reception kitting out.

    ST xx

We had our wedding in AZ and had done spandex table covers from Sculptware. I agree that the pins you have shared are wonderful but we wanted to have the table setup in British style. So I’m not sure if or not the market there in UK is ready for them or not.
