Live band for smaller weddings?

LottaVictualia, 21 July, 2011 at 21:31 Posted on Planning 0 12

We are planning a small wedding, about 45 for the day and an additional 40 for the evening. H2b and I love live music, but were wondering whether a band would be a bit OTT for these numbers, also considering that not everyone would be dancing. H2b found a really good duo though that is doing acoustic versions of songs, both up-beat and slow ones, rather than the full band versions. Would this work or would it feel out of place for you?

I think a duo is a great idea. That's what we're having as we couldn't afford a full band and our venue isn't huge. If you love live music and that's one of the things that going to 'make' your day, then go for it! Not OTT at all.

I had excatly the same issue. I really wanted the atmosphere of live music, but was concerned that it would be OTT as we only had 48 geusts at a small venue. We went for a duo in the end. I'd say go for it! It made our evening. The band were really good at reading the atmosphere and had most peole up dancing all night. They were called Ashmore Acoustics.

Thanks ladies. Can I cheekily ask what you paid for the duo?

I paid £900 for the duo we hired. I found this was alot more expensive than other duos I looked at, but they did a fantastic job and I felt it was worth it!

We're paying around £700. For that, they will come and set up in the morning, before the ceremony (we're having the wedding breakfast and the evening reception in the same room, so to save disruption, they are setting up in the morning), they'll do an acoustic set between the speeches and the evening reception and then two 90 minute sets in the evening (I think it's 2 x 90 mins, but the paperwork is at home!), plus their ipod disco in between sets and after their sets. They've also said we can use their PA system for our own music during the meal and the mics for the speeches if we want. Hope that helps!

Wow this sounds like a really good deal, Jen. What's the name of the duo if you don't mind me asking? Cheers.

It's Cupids Wish. They do have a full band too, but the husband and wife perform as the duo. I think we may have had to pay a little extra for the morning set up (on top of the price I've said - sorry, it's the last day of term and I'm a bit frazzled!) but for the convenience, we reckoned it was worth it, plus it enables them to play their acoustic set before the actual reception kicks off.

Thank you. No worries about the frazzledness. Are you a teacher? I am too and I know what it's like. I was looking at the Hares Duo, they charge 850 for 2x60 min and an ipod disco service till midnight for after their sets. I haven't decided yet, but tend to prefer male voices to female ones.

    Hey there,

We are having roughly the same amount of people as you and have booked a live band. We are the same as you and both love live music so id say if you want it, go for it!! ?

Just check you can fit them into your venue.m

Yep, am a secondary school teacher and can't wait for the break! Cupids wish is mainly a female voice although I think the husband does do some signing. He's an awesome guitarist though and her voice is lovely. Where in the country do you teach?

I am teaching in an independent school in Devon and was lucky enough to break up for the hols on the 8th. I have just over a year to go and am a bit wedding obsessed at the moment. H2b is a teacher too and has his last day today. I'll try and get the main planning (reception, caterer, tog, entertainment etc) done this summer as I doubt I'll be doing much during term time. Where abouts are you?

Get on to Alive Network. They are the best agents for booking live music and Dj's too. They'll be able to advise you as to which band would be good for a certain size of party, venue, type of music etc.
