Living abroad - Where would you go?

deedee, 24 June, 2008 at 11:40 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 36

Hi

I go through stages of really wanting to pack everything up and move abroad. There are a lot of reasons why this would not be possible (leaving family) but on my selfish days I like to dream!

If you could move abroad with no hassle, where would you go? Today I am thinking Amercia or Canada.

    Europe. prob france or italy.

i'd like to live in NYC but only for a year or so. ditto melbourne.

it's only after having travelled extensively that i've realised how much i like living in the UK. ideally we'll always be based here, but will live abroad for around 3-4 months out of each year. this is what we've been doing since 2006 and it's the best of both worlds imo.

Gosh! Where I wouldn't go to live would be an easier question to ask! ?

Guess my current favourite possibilities are Italy, Argentina, Australia & New Zealand. Although this changes according to mood.

Realistically it'd be somewhere less than 4 hours away, I could live on the Costa de la luz actually.

    Switzerland.

And actually I do like Switzerland, and enjoy living here, but I miss friends and family. We haven't made that many friends here, and I feel I am losing touch with my UK friends. Plus property prices are extortionate here (they make the UK look so, so cheap), the amount of racism and prejudice is ridiculous - are are many reasons I wouldn't want to settle here long term.

Sometimes I think I would love to move somewhere like Canada, but my experience over the last year has just shown me that i would miss my family too much. At least now I can pop home for the odd weekend, and it doesn't take toooo long, or cost toooo much, but it takes longer, and costs more, than I want it too.?

I would say Australia, as I love it, but too far away from family really.

I wouldn't mind living in one of the Canary Islands. Hot in the winter and not too far to fly home.

We're looking at BC, Canada at the moment. But it's going to be at least 18months off, if at all ☹️

I've always fancied Canada, to work in for a year or so if not move there. It's stange though because I've never actually been, very drawn to the place though. I think perhaps it's because I like snow.. and apparently they get quite a bit over there :-P x

Where abouts in Switzerland? I live in france but near geneva, Besançon area if you know it? The Swiss do seem to be getting a bit racist/prejudice at the moment. The whole black sheep thing was a bit woah .

Back to the UK, but as we're moving to Doha in Qatar next month there's not much chance we'll be returning for a good few years yet

Where would I live? If family/friends didn't exist then Perth or Sydney (Perth Australia, not Scotland .....)

Realistically - Southern Spain - not on the coast. My brother lives in a mountain village and i ADORE it out there (Benahavis). But hubby won't even comtemplate Spain so .....

Actually, even with Family/Friends in existance I wish I had the guts (and points!) to go to Australia..... just to say i've done it for a few years.

I'd try just about anywhere given the chance ?. My dad has worked overseas since I was 11, so I've seen a lot of the 'ex-pat' life in various places.

As it happens, we're moving to Minneapolis in January thanks to my husband's job transfer, so we'll see how that turns out ?

Ponders: it would definitely depend on how much money I had - are we choosing a place to live if we didn't have to work? ?

Because I'd probably love England if I were rich enough not to have to work - I'd go back to University, I'd take lots of craft courses,... bliss

But if I had to choose I'd say probably Italy or Prague.

[Greedy] I'd like a flat in Paris and a farmhouse in the South of France (more research needed into the latter location) please. Also a pair of dogs, a pair of dogs and a pair of llamas. And a writing shed in an old stone outhouse. And a goat actually, called Pepe who would come and nibble me affectionately whilst I was working. [/Greedy]

Ideally back to england with an old farm in the country etc etc. However not fancying this i keep hearing about the cost of living going up.

We are tentaively thinking about sweden - clean, friendly, high tax but seems to be worth it, gorgeous place etc etc, plus we have friends there

Hmmm, it would be a toss up between Miami or the Alsace region in France.

One is an amazing vibrant city, the other is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Both very different but very appealing

We're saving up to move to Canada once OH has got his kayak qualifications together. Italy and Spain were on the cards but we are both REALLY bad at languages!! We live away from our families at the mo and only see them a few times a year anyway (usually begrudgingly (sp?)) so that isn't an issue at all.

Sydney is top of the list at the moment. H is an Honorary Professor at the University of New South Wales and goes out there three times a year so I'm pleeeeeading with him to keep networking in case a suitable position comes up and we can move over there.

Second choice would be California but the Universities are a bit pants. We'd be more likely to live on the East Coast as that's where the "biggies" are.

I'm getting itchy feet. We've been here now for nearly 5 years and that's the longest we've been anywhere so far - it does feel like it's time to move on again even though I really love our house and the area I live in.

I sometimes watch programmes about moving to places like Australia and think how lovely it would be. Realistically though, I really love England and especially Englishness and I think I would miss it.

I wouldn't mind a few years travelling about to find out though

good point, and no, i guess not. but MrF's job changes so often (flippin academia ?) and by the time she starts school i will (hopefully) be finished re-training, so we'll either settle in the UK for a good few years or go wherever the best work opportunities happen to be.

2 pairs of dogs? You are brave ?

That actually sounds very nice but I would probably swop the flat in Paris for a nice house in North Vancouver.

We have already moved to NYC. We've also considered trying for a spell in Singapore. As we both work in Investment Banking there's a limit to where we could go. I wouldn't mind going back to Paris for a bit but I'm not sure how my non French speaking husband would fare there!

Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the caribbean all would be fun but only if for a fixed term.

Long term I love being here.
