Location Dilemma

(Claire), 31 July, 2014 at 11:36 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

Sis lives in the north east, we are in the west mids, we are planning to meet this Sunday somewhere in the middle, and I’m struggling to think where, it must be child and dog friendly, nothing too pricey if at all, the idea was to pack a pic nic and make a day of it. I thought the peak district could be a choice but I’ve never been and wouldn’t have the first clue of where best to go.

Anyone any suggestions because I’m at a dead end now.

    How about Yorkshire Scuplture Park:

    http://www.ysp.co.uk/page/dogs/tc

Gorgeous spot and great for kids to run around and dog friendly. Good for picnics - that's what we do, and you only pay for parking Smiley smile

The Peak Disctrict is lovely and gets heaving, but our fave place is Castleton. Loads of hills to ramble up.

Other option is Clumber Park - that even has a BBQ area and you can take bikes.

ETA - around Leeds you've got Temple Newsam or Roundhay Park. Harewood House is a good attraction. There's loads. I think you need to decide where your half way point is and what radius of that is OK.

Leeds would be the cut off point.

YSP is a bit South of Leeds but literally just off the M1.

Harewood is just North of Leeds. but off the main road network. Has loads for kids to do including a petting Zoo type thing and climbing gear etc etc.

Roundhay is in Leeds itself but not difficult to find and is a massive park.

Temple Newsam is prob the easiest from the M1.

What about York? Loads to do there. Can be busy though so perhaps not great for dogs in the city, but you can walk around the walls, go to Rowntree Park.

Or go to the coast either East or West.

    This is it:

Covers the dog, children, food (even gluten free!) and cheap?

I second the Yorkshire Park suggestion mainly because of how close to the M1 it is and its further south so its around J38 of the M1 I think. It is also huge so no matter how many people are there it doesn't feel too crowded. Roundhay park on the other hand can get a bit too busy for my liking. Harewood house is also nice - just not as easy for you to get to from the Midlands.

If you are looking for something further South I also like Chatsworth House but that is further away from the motorway.

Third the YSP. I am in Leeds and it is decently south on the M1 so closer to you than Leeds itself.

Harewood house, although lovely is prob a bit far as it's North of Leeds and also not especially dog friendly. Some areas are but quite a bit is out of bounds for dogs.

Roundhay park is one of my faves but again North Leeds so will take you a bit to get off the motorway and into the city and also nowhere near as much to do as YSP.

    Yeah I'd say YSP too.

You'll want to kill someone getting to Roundhay or Harewood, especially if ease is a factor.

YSP is literally 3 minutes off junction 38 of the M1.

If you are thinking Peak District, Bakewell is lovely. Though I think it may well be the Bakewell show this weekend which makes the area busy.

Rother Valley country park up by Sheffield is a nice park to walk around and have a picnic. Can watch people falling off doing water sports!

After all your suggestions and then having a quick look ourselves we come across Rother Valley Country Park in Sheffield. It looks really good, there’s a huge lake which hosts lots of different water sports, a play area for the kids, you can hire bikes etc , it has something for everyone.

Thanks for all your idea though. H and I will definitely do the YSP at some point just don’t think it would be suited for my nieces who are a bit young to appreciate it all.
