London hotels?

sarahl2691, 16 July, 2014 at 14:11 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

Im wondering if anyone on here from London can give me a bit of advice on hotels. Im looking to go to London in November for 3 nights with my mum as a surprise for her birthday.

I've done a bit of googling and have found some nice places but thought id see if anyone else had any ideas, It needs to be near paddington/touristy places and nothing too expensive as we are travelling up from Devon. So around £100 per night?

If anyone can help that'll be great Smiley laugh

Oh man, it's hard as there are so many. I usually end up with a Travelodge as a safe option - although last time I went I stayed in the one next to Euston and it was a bit, well, basic. I stayed in a really nice guesthouse near the British Museum a few years ago, but of course I've forgotten the name. The one thing I would say is don't book through hotels.com - they royally messed up my booking last time and pursuing them to make a complaint was hard work.

Sadly £100 per night doesn't stretch far in London. I would suggest focusing on the big budget chains or look out for a good deal on laterooms, lastminute.com travago etc

London is pretty easy to get around so you may not have to be that restricted via area depending on your plans. If you have any hotels in mind but are unsure about location etc just give us a shout.

I had a look at the Plaza but it was a bit too pricey! Thinking of going for the travelodge/ibis style hotel and hoping its nice! We will be out most of the day so its literally just somewhere to sleep! fingers crossed we get a good place Smiley smile

£100 budget is really tricky in London. You could look at tube lines that you might use and search for places further out but near a tube station you could use to bring costs down. Also, occasionally hotels do 3 nights for the price of 2 offers which would suit you very well, so check out the offers pages of places you're interested in. I've also got good deals from SecretEscapes - not always the cheapest places to start with but might be worth a look.

Prior to living in London I used to visit a lot with friends.

I would say that the closer to the tourist areas/mainline train stations the more basic your hotel would need to be for your budget. Plus the area surrounding it might be a bit dodgy after dark. I stayed once in a hotel near Paddington prior to getting a flight and it was grim despite the reviews saying it was ok. I went to the local shop for some bits and bobs and it just didn't feel very safe.

I have always stayed in areas where there are a few nice restaurants to visit at night and within walking distance to a tube stop. Getting around London is an absolute breeze so staying in touristy/central station areas is a completely unnecessary IMO. I would rather be somewhere that was nicer and had nice places to go out at night. The hotels in these areas are much more pocket friendly as tourists tend to overlook them when looking for somewhere to stay.

I have always put in the dates I want into trip advisor and then narrowed it by budget to get a feel for areas. Don't forget to check through the B&B and speciality lodging area (selection is right at the top of the page). I have stayed in some really nice serviced studio apartments for less than a hotel price.

I'm sure when I looked a while ago, the area around paddington actually had some pretty good rates. It's easy enough to get from there to the very centre. Try laterooms.com for an idea.

We usually stay in premier inns to keep costs down (tower bridge and Southwark mostly) although we got a good late deal on a doubletree by Hilton which was lovely and quite central.

Is that the one near Tower bridge? They have an amazing roof top bar.

yeah that's the one! We never went up to the bar on the first night and there was a private party the second so we never got to see it!

A few years back I went with the girls and we got a great deal at the H10 Waterloo, last year we went for my sister's 18th for one night and stayed at The comfort Inn, Victoria; cheap and cheerful but was close to station and they held bags for the day :-)

There are sometimes good deals to be had with mystery hotels on Lastminute.com. There are also some decent Premier Inn's and Travelodges. Last year some friends of ours stayed in a Travelodge near Covent Garden which they said as good.
