Long shot - anyone ever driven to Greece?

JK, 16 April, 2008 at 11:43 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

Obviously there'll be an element of ferry from Italy, but anyone? I'm not dragging my autistic son onto a plane again till he can actually say he's ok with it, so next year I'm thinking of going overland (and sea) to my parents in Crete. (Well actually to rent a house near them because I can't face two weeks solid with them either ?....)

TIA ?

My friends have, they have a house in Greece. They said it's a fabulous drive. They got the ferry to France, drove through France, down the whole of Italy and then got the overnight Ferry to Greece. The first time they were delivering furniture so they pretty much drove 24 hours a day and they did it in 4 days!

We drive to Italy and take around 3 days (Lake Garda), which I don't fine very pleasant and it's around 6 hours driving a day.

If you want me to ask them anything let me know.

H and I drove a car for cousin to Malta many moons ago. As I recall it took about 10 hours driving (just stopping for petrol) to get near the Italian border where we stopped for the night. I think another 9 hours driving to Rome where we stopped again and then another 9-10 hours to Sicily, and then ferry to Malta.

We like driving and the roads were good (mostly) so we enjoyed it but it would probably be a nightmare with kids unless you stopped frequently. Though if you did that by the time you got there it would be time to come back.

Oooh fab. If I come up with any queries I'll shout out ?

I've driven to Prague from Somerset once, we drove virtually non-stop and it took a couple of days, which was fine. Four or five days then? Good to know.

Luckily our children like being in the car. We drove from Inverness to Brighton non-stop (so about 12 hours virtually non-stop and they were fine.

    Cheers ?

    Hi
Haven't driven as far as Greece with the kids but once a year drive to Austria (I know not as far!) to see my dad.

The first time we did it was a living horror - we decided to do it all in one go and drive overnight (about 11 hours from Calais) thinking the kids would sleep. Oh god JK, it brings me out in a cold sweat now thinking about it ?. When A started talking about the journey back I think I sat down and cried and demanded he buy me a flight ticket!!

Anyway - the following year we broke the journey up - only doing about 5 - 6 hours driving a day - lots of stops, no time pressure and through the day. Fabulous fun - we take about 3 days now to get down there.

To be honest, for that trip I don't think we'd consider flying now - it's so much easier, we can take much more stuff and it's a darn sight cheaper than getting 4 flights.

(If you haven't got one already would strongly recommend a mini dvd player thingy - lazy town for days on end can be a bit wearing but it's so much better than the alternative ?

    Blossom, I've Inter-railed (at 28 ?). I loved it too!

    Bridget, hello there ?
We have DVD player, we bought it when we drove to Inverness. I love driving, as does my friend who will drive down with me so I think it will be doable.

I have friends who drive from Belgrade to Turkey (Istanbul and Marmaris) every summer. Takes about 12 hours from Belgrade, so add maybe 3 days to that to get to Belgrade?

I also know people in Belgrade who drive to Greece so it is do-able. Driving in Serbia can be a bit of a nightmare until you get used to it but it's one motorway from the top of the country through Belgrade to the bottom so easy to navigate.
