I'm trying to remember the name of a movie I saw a few years ago, and short of registering for some sort of movie buff forum I figured I'd give the Hitched folk a shot with this one!
I saw it in the cinema around 2005 or 2006. I think it was made in China. Or Japanese, so subtitled. Its story was set in a dynasty a couple thousand years ago and involved the viewer seeing a visitor to a ruler's court tell the ruler how he escaped from something. Except the story this civilian tells the ruler isn't the truth, and when called upon it, another reconstruction of the same story happens, albeit slightly differently. The movie ends with thousands of arrows flying through the air to kill this visitor, who isn't a good visitor at all, but really a spy to distract from something (rebels storming his palace? I'm not sure).
The movie was quite a big one, and was by a director or writer that had another large movie released just before or after it. Some words to do with colours, or a famous scene involving something to do with bright colours, comes to mind, for that other movie s/he did.
Does that sound familiar to anyone? Total long shot on this one but can't hurt to try.
