Longshot - anyone use Medline or CINAHL databases?

Kaz_76, 5 June, 2009 at 18:47 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

I know there are a few academic types floating around so worth an ask.

Searching via Ebscohost, there is no KW - Keyword option but there are a few others including Major Word in heading etc

Not selecting a field is giving me an unmanageable number of results to search through but when I select any of the 4 headings options or abstract or 'all text', it's then too narrow as doesn't come up with papers I'd already found by ploughing through the original search and don't want to lose them.

I know you can also use Medline via Ovid but this seems even more complicated to me. Any ideas?

Sorry - I tend to use World of Knowledge so probably can't help at all!

Got all excited then when you'd replied!

I take it you mean Web if Knowledge?

Just checked and I can access that Smiley smile

Please stay with me, you may able to really help me out....do you know which drop down option would be considered the best for a systematic review?

ie Topic or MeSH heading or major heading?

I've used KW for a PsycINFO search and then put in lots of OR...OR terms plus another set on the next line. So I'm not familiar with using the MeSH options, wondered if I can keep it consistent with the other search if that makes any sense.

off to have aplay to see if I can suss it...

Gah, it doesn't like OR... on the same line.

Any ideas how I can do this search?

“adolescent grie*” or “adolescent bereave*” OR “adolescent loss”

    AND

    adjustment OR adaptation OR psychopathology

    ?

I think if you do one search then the other, you can then go into search history and do search 1 and search 2

I just did the search on Medline using Ebsco and did the following:

adolescent AND (grie* OR bereav* OR loss) = results

these results AND ( adjustment OR adaptation OR psychopathology)

    which gave me 1495 results.

Many thanks! 1500 is way too many which is the difficulty I'm having as I can't hand search those and if I try and narrow down using any of the fields you can select, the results I found originally aren't coming up.

I just remembered it was PubMed I'd used before and you do one line at a time then combine using #1 AND #2 etc

When I do this, I get much more manageable results, around 60 but oddly the original ones I'd found aren't there so goodness knows how I did that original search and can;' find my notes anywhere ?

    thanks, will keep trying

I use medline and cinahl via Ovid and I don't think it is too complicated and does give you the keyword option - haven't used Ebscohost so can't shed anymore light on that

I've resolved it now and almost through the final 152 results I'd got it down to! Via Ovid there isn't a field that is called 'Keyword' as such, just several other options which all give different results. I went back to PubMed as realised that's where I'd done my original search but oddly wasn't getting same results.

Thanks to Hazel ? and mentioning WOK, I managed to get it to 152 Smiley smile and these included my original 8 or so, soooo happy now!

The search wasn't working first as it didn't like the quotation marks pasted from Word but was okay when I typed them straight in - VERY strange and so chuffed iwth myself I worked it out!
