Looks like the recession is closer to home than I hoped - BIG update

Ostrich, 30 September, 2008 at 14:50 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 51

MrOs is a civil engineer for a major construction company. He's just phoned to say the MD is coming to their job tomorrow to lay off 60 people. That's 35% of the staff at this particular job. I'm trying not to panic, I'm trying to forget about it until we hear what happens, but with two under two in the house and a sizeable mortgage, it's hard not to worry.

Update: Well, big boss has arrived on site. Everyone is quaking in their boots so I don't think it'll be long now until we know. Please cross your fingers/say a prayer. I'm a wreck here, not helped I guess by the fact that the baybee has been awake teething half the night and woke the 2 year old so I've been up since 5am. A couple of extra hours for worrying, eh? ☹️

Update: His job is safe. I feel gutted for the people who have lost their jobs but I'm obviously very relieved that he's not one of them. Thank you all so much for your thoughts and good wishes. I really appreciate it. I really feel for those in similar circumstances at the moment.

You have to put it out of your mind don't you or you will go mad. My Brother inlaw had to make nearly 80 people redundant last week and he said it was awful, my sister said he has been in bits all week, but even his job is not looking so safe now. It is a worrying time. Fingers crossed for you and your H for tomorrow.

Thanks Sun. If it was just me and MrOs it'd be bad, but not too bad, because I'd still have my job to bail us out. Being on maternity leave not alone rots your brain, but turns you into the worrying wifey at home. ☹️

    Fingers crossed too ?

I know the feeling all too well. H (who works for a certain global bank) is constantly shielding himself from the falling axe at the moment.

Thanks everyone, you're all so lovely. I don't get time to come on here much recently but you're still so fabulously supportive. It's much appreciated.

I don't think anyone is safe and that's whats so worrying.

I'm like you at home with two little ones and a big mortgage that I doubt I could cover if I had to go back to work.

Fingers crossed for good news for you.

I hope nobody is feeling bad about posting on the other thread. It's reassuring to hear that the recession/credit crunch isn't having a huge effect on everyone. I'm hoping and praying it won't hit us so hard either, but we'll know that tomorrow.

Thanks for all the replies and good wishes. I'll update this thread tomorrow when I know more.
