Losing my job... :(

teeheeyoucrazyguys!, 18 May, 2010 at 17:55 Posted on Planning 0 35

Just found out. I really had hoped it hadnt come to this. All my colleagues are on permanent contracts. I wasnt so lucky and missed the boat. Worked a year on supply, then a year as part time and part supply and then in Feb got offered a fixed term. Contract ending in July..however having been told i was 'one of the good 'uns....' it was looking hopeful that i'd be returning to school in august.

spoke to my boss ahead of tomorrows weekly meeting to be told it wasnt happening. Hes not happy about the decision and it all comes down to funding cuts. It makes me so angry when i am a trained specialist as opposed to just a teacher with a passion for what I do. Plus i'll have to break the news to all my schools and dont know how i'll do that without breaking down.....

my boss said he would understand if i didnt go to the meeting tomorrow night but i said i would......

wtf am i going to do???????? at the moment it looks like busking outside the closed down woolies......

Oh honey thats C**P!! im really sorry to hear that, i can remember you saying a while ago that things were a bit dodgey in the job department but you were hopefull! what is your speciality? i think you are doing the right thing by going tommorrow but try not to let emotion take over, its their loss - hmm and the kids/ students i suppose - thats the bit that would make me cross.

are you in a position to offer private tutoring? x

I'm so sorry to hear that, it's horrible. Will you be able to do supply until you get something permanent?

Oh teehee, that's rubbish. And I think your boss didn't do the best job of handling it by clearly leading you to think you'd get a permanent contract. Is your H's job secure? You have time to work it out at least.

    Thanks girls, means a lot.

I'm a specialist in drama, touring schools in my area that i'm allocated. I cant do supply in primary as I'm not a primary teacher - though i work in them and as i have been doing this same job since 2008, yes thats 2.5 years doing this job just never on a perm contract, I would find it very difficult to go back into secondary (which is where i'm trained)

being on supply means i wont be entitled to maternity which was the big plan. the whole teaching/funding malarky has been ballsed up royally, with sooooo many people losing their jobs and sadly us arty farty ones are at risk also. Hell, the probationers dont have jobs to go to come august........

ive gone from performer to all round theatre lackie to teacher of drama, hell I couldnt even get a job in debenhams one christmas a few years back!.......hubbys been brilliant and told me not to worry. Just wish we didnt just splash out on a summer house to be my office. Will be a glorified library instead me thinks......

Oh hun, not much I can say really to help.

My H2B works in a school doing PPA cover (football coach) but through an agency at the moment which charges the school a lot of money and so is constantly at risk of being cut at budget time. He is trying to get the school to take him on direct at the moment so that he has a permanent job and gets the benefits to go with it (sick pay, paternity etc.)

Is PPA cover something that you could look into? All schools have to have PPA time so there is some budget for it at least?

    xx

Mrs c i think you might be talking about our rcct time, where teachers get time to do marking and all that jazz....thats when i would take their classes.......i am rcct cover within the time table. I could see if schools would take me on but they would have to be schools where my fellow thespians dont teach. Just broke the news to one of my colleagues and shes livid.......

    i need some chocolate!

Sorry to hear this. Myself & another teacher are both on 1 year contracts at our primary school & was told at the end of last week that there are 2 permanent positions for September but they are being advertised externally & we have to reapply. Arghh I hate application forms & interviews are even worse & I haven't had a great year so I'm worried that I won't have a job come the end of the year.

I really hope you're able to find another position, it must be hard with such a specialist area. Good luck & keep us posted x

Lol debbie i am wondering what on earth i could do from home instead, or via the web.......hubby reckons wedding stuffs would suit me but i dont know what he meant really....

we go back in august, not september and supply works through the council, not seperate agencies...

now do i put on a brave face and go to the meeting tomorrow to find out where my colleagues are working next year, or do i go home instead at 3.30, allowing my boss to break the news....

    coz i might blub.

I'm so sorry to hear that Teehee...such shite news. Maybe you should just wait & see how you feel tomorrow about the meeting. I'm sure no one would expect you to go knowing the situation.

Hope you find something else really soon, even if it's just to tide you over.

Teehee, I am 98.5% sure that you can do supply at primary even if you're not a trained primary teacher, I was even told that was my only way to move from secondary to primary (but can't afford it...)

Good luck, it's very sad for you, I hope you find something pretty sharpish, I know there's a drama job going in my area, where are you based?

    xx

    Don't despair!

I was feeling like that too in feb when we were told that our department was closing down in sepetember this year and all work was being moved to Chester (silly as the colleagues there had to move into a new building to accomodate the work coming in - surely that was more expensive!). read my thread "O/T From redundant to promotion in 24hrs!" for some pick-me-up, cheerful inspiration! xxxx

I just dont know what i'll do instead, theres hundreds of teachers out of work and only so many jobs. I'm a drama teacher, thats all i do and its not seen in the same light as it is in england...

Not sure what to suggest really as I don't know the 'market' (not the right word for teaching profession but for lack of..) any chance of going private while you look for something else? any rich kids needing drama classes? maybe start your own course somewhere ?
