Losing weight for the big day and need help!

FelicityChaplin, 2 January, 2010 at 22:40 Posted on Planning 0 16

Ok, so I am overweight and seeing as my wedding is only 6-8 months away (haven't finalised date yet), I know it's impossible to go from a size 22/24 to a size 12/14.
However I would like to lose a couple of stone and hopefully improve my problem areas. (Hips, stomach, back and tops of arms.)
I was thinking of going to Weight Watchers, but to be honest I simply cannot afford to. Is there anyone out there of a similar size who has any ideas of how I can achieve this without expensive help?

Thank you. Smiley smile

All the dieting in the world won't work unless you exercise - Eat Less, Move More!

Your best bet (and unfortunately it would come with a reasonable cost) is to see if you have a curves ladies gym near you. They are excellent at promoting fitness without too much effort and can also help with weightloss by their healthy eating plan...and I've seen some amazing results in a short amount of time at my curves.

There are lots of offers on at the moment and I bet you could loose at least 4 dress sizes in time for your big day.

Is there a workout vid you might like? Salsacise or belly dancing etc are way more fun than boring workout ones... Also, swimming is always good- especially for toning the arms!

I agree with Tahdah - unfortunately you HAVE to exercise to lose any weight whilst toning up. Why don't you try a bit of power walking and progress to jogging eventually???? This might be a better financial choice for you if you are struggling for money. Do you have a bike??? Cycling is good also. Can you walk more during the day ie walking to work, getting out for a walk at lunchtime etc???

Eat more fruit and veg and cut out the junk but give yourself a treat every now and again if you have been good.

I did weight watchers online, which significantly reduced the cost, but still gave you all the tools and support to give me a kick start! Agree with the others that exercise is a must too, even if you just do "free" stuff like walking and cycling. I went from 16 stone to 11 in just over 6 months with weight watchers, so it can work!

I'm doing ww as well however I have realised after messing about for ages that I need the structure (and fear) of going to the meetings.

The key things I would say are:

1> Track-keep a food diary-write everything down before you put it in your mouth!

2- Exercise- as already said be more active can be walking, cycling, running up the stairs, bouncing on a small trampoline, skipping etc

3- portion size be very aware of how uch you are eating

4- get support- family friends etc- my family always asks how Ive got on etc and celebrate with me when I have lost

Hope this helps a bit xx

I did do Slimming world and plan on starting it back up tomorrow. I lost 9 and a half pounds first time round, I bought the mags and used the website for recipes!! I didn't do much excercise, the occasional Yoga class or Aerobics but thats it.

I agree with the whole, needing structure thing. Unless I'm going to be publicly embarrased by a gain, I have no motivation. lol (weird I know!! lol )

Idid go to the meetings but had to give it up as I couldn't afford to go to the meetings each week, but how about we all post our weekly weight losses/Gains?? (Only if you feel comfy doing it!!) I know it would give me more motivation, as you need people to tell you thats fab etc!

Exercise is the main way to loose weight, my mum is the same, she more or less just wants to drink slim fast, eat less etc etc but at the end of the day if she keeps going down that road she is gonna have sooo much excess skin she will end up having to get surgery to remove it, you need to exercise to tone up your skin as well as muscle to make you look good.

If you feel you need a "kick start" though, I got my mum and dad on tablets called Xenical (Orlistat) from the GP, they lost 4 stone in 4 months so they did work, the only thing with slimming tablets is that if you aren't careful you will pile the weight back on and more and it will be harder to get off the next time, which is what has happened to my parents, now they are thinking that they only have 7 mths to trim down again and if they go back to the doc with the weight they have gained they won't get another script for the tabs.

There is no real easy way to loose weight, there are "cheats" for it but to stay the way that makes you happy you need to really work at it ?

I think just doing a couple of 20 mins walk helps.

I sometimes get off the bus at the Inlaws on my way home from work, and walk to mine, and tend to walk to partick from town before I get the bus, both are an extra 20-25 mins walks which means I'm walking slightly more than usual. I also dance about like a maniac when i'm peeling totties, or making soup. lol Sounds silly, but rolling your hips about and jumping up and down more than usual does help too!!

Try joining a low activity fitness class like yoga, they don't push you too hard, and doing the simple poses speeds up metabolism!!

All of this helped me when I tried to lose weight the first time.... but Indian food is just toooooooo tempting for me. ☹️

Www.foodfocus.co.uk is quite good. it has alot of foods on it so u dion't have to work out the calories for everything. it also keeps track of ur exercise so it tells u how many calories u have left.

If you have a wii there are a few fitness games on there that are quite cheap, i got fitness coach for about £12. it plans ur workouts for you and keeps track of ur progress like weight, chest size, waist size etc, it makes it easier to see how well ur doing.

I agree with the others who've said you need some kind of structure, and for me that was going to Slimming world. I got to my target last year but have messed around a bit recently and need to get back on track (starting again on wednesday) so think posting our losses each week would help!!

Out of all the diets out there I would really reccomend Slimming world, You will be amazed at how much food you can eat and it really focus's on your main food groups and how you should be eating. The best thing is there is no calorie/pont counting or measuring, some days I still don;t believe im working to losing weight because I have a big ol plate of pasta and its free on the plan!

If you want to save your bucks then I would probably just buy the magazines each month and follow the plan from there...

I would also reccomend doing some excercise for about 30mins for at least 3x a week (it will help speed up your loss in a shorter amount of time, speed up your metabolism and as others have said create and firm up muscle, by increasing muscle you will then burn more calories).

Within your first few weeks you will drop quite a bit, it will then slow down and a good mount to lose is 2lbs per week, you really don;t want to lose more then that on a regular basis otherwise you risk losing muscle and that would defeat the whole purpose...

I just wanted to add its better to lose weight the slow and steady route, yes it can be tempting to do diets which can drop large amounts of weight in a shorter period of time, but long term they will mess up your metabolism and you will risk putting it all back on at a later date.

After doing other diets SW will be the only plan I will be able to do for the rest of my life, even whilst pregnant...

If you need any advice on the plan feel free to pm me im happy to help!

    xxxx

Well every Sunday Afternoon we will do a "How did you do?" Thread and motivate each other!!!

I've got aerobics on saturday and combat cardio on thursday so hopefully I'll shift something. lol

Oh and you DO NOT need to put your overall weight, just the loss/gains so we can all share encouragement!!!
