losing weight for wedding.

mrs zippy, 28 April, 2008 at 17:35 Posted on Planning 0 9

I know this may seem silly but it is worrying me. I am overweight 2 stone to be precise. Since i got engaged 5 weeks ago i have lost just over half a stone (which doesnt seem much but i was on holiday for part of it) i still have at least 1 and a half to go until i would be happy. I am not getting married until next summer so i have plenty of time and know i will lose it - the issue is do i start trying on dresses now or wait until i have lost more weight. Lat year i had a horrid experience trying to find a dress for a summer ball. It made me really really miserable as i felt so big and it was a wake up call as to how much i had let myself go.Instead of reacting positively and doing something about it i went the other way and thought oh well i am fat anyway ill continue and put on more weight leaving me in the situation i am in now. However i feel positive right now, my clothes are fitting better and gym/swimming is imprving my complexion.

My friends and Mum have been so lovely and are so excited about the wedding and really want to do the whole wedding dress shopping thing and keep saying i shouldnt leave it too late to start. I am worried if i go now i will depress myself and might regress. My friends say im crazy and that it would be a real spur to continue losing weight.

Does anyone else think i am silly? I am one of those people who has thought about her wedding for years and i am really surprised i am not excited about the dress at all - infact i dread it :-( Has anyone else been in this situation - what did you do????

Hi there ..... Having been a bride to be (size 14/16) and more recently helping a friends friend find a dress (who is probably a size 10) take heart from this... my pals pal at a size 10 struggled to get into some of the sample dresses...

Very few designers supply samples to fit todays average curvy sexy woman! So you could go in at your perfect size/weight and still have to have bits of material slipped in the back and imagine the dress without it being pulled across your hips and thighs (depending on the style of course!)

Of course, some dresses will be huge on you and then you have the other dilemma of imagining it without the pinned wad of material at the back, or the shop assistant tugging back heaps of slack material!

So try not to think of your dress trials as anything to do with your weight - and if the samples don't fit, don't become despondent!

There are some stores who cater better for ladies who might not be so confident about their bodies, and that isn't just to do with weight - excess or otherwise. could be that they're busty or flat chested, pale skinned - anything. Maybe try to get some ideas of really helpful stores to visit in your area from fellow Hitchers.

I found (as have other Hitchers, knowing the stories I've read on here!) that some bridal stores (or their consultants at least) are so hell bent on just making a sale they don't give a toss about the bride to be in front of them and their feelings, and THAT could be something that makes you feel down!

But it is a fun part of the wedding organising as long as you don't allow it to become all encompassing!

I had the same worries as you being a size 18 but I've really enjoyed the whole trying on experience. The best thing is with so many dresses being lace up it doesn't really matter if they are few sizes too small.

Go for it it's great fun!!!!

(and I hate clothes shopping with a passion usually)

You will lose the weight easily in 1 1/2 years. I've been going to the gym and eating healthily just since Jan and have lost 2st 10lbs and gone down 2 dress sizes.

I have put off buying a dress though, I'm only going to buy it with 2 months to go. It depends on how important the dress is to you - for me is not very hence why I've put it off.

If I knew where you lived I would be dragging you out now!! ?, I'm a size 10/12 and I struggled getting my backside into a few of the dresses I tried on but to be completely honest, no matter what size/shape you are, once you find your dress you know it's the one.

Just think how fantastic you will look in the dress of your dreams now and how SEXY you will be in it at your final fitting!!! ?

I'm a size 10-12, (depending on which bit of me you measure) and I've had a nightmare with dresses owing to an A cup chest!! Even with a padded bra I need major alterations, cus they 'aint going to get any bigger in the next 6 months! So go for it! try stuff on! Try on stuff you would never see yourself in, go out and have fun! You may not find 'the dress' in your first outing but it IS out there so go and have fun finding it... well go on then!!

First of all massive hugs! In January 07 I was a size 22. My doctor is really fantastic and prescribed me some weight loss drugs and in the last year and a bit I've lost 3 stone. It's my birthday on wednesday and my mum and dad managed to get me a Wii Fit because I'm slightly concerned that I wouldn't fit into my dress!

I bought the first one I saw which I fell in love with. I was really worried about the size of my arms, but my mum and my CBM cried and nearly cried so that combined with the fact it was corsetted so could give a bit with my weight - seemed like a really good idea!

The dress maker advised me that I should get the dress about 6 months before the wedding, then they have an idea about your weight and shape. She also took into consideration my previous weight loss and was pretty fantastic.

Trust your gut feeling. Don't let yourself be pushed into anything and make sure that you're comfortable in the shop with the ladies serving you. Good luck! xx

I ordered my dress a size smaller than I was back in December. I needed to in order to give me that very real incentive to lose weight. So far I've lost 2 stone. I have 6 months until my wedding & would love to lose another 2 stone by then.

I dreaded going dress shopping (and hate clothes whopping anyway) but I found that the lace up dresses were fine, despite me being rather porky ?

You will look lovely, no matter what you wear

    Start looking now!!!

You'd be surprised there are some 'NO PESSURE' gowns out there that make you look fabulous, gorgeous and stunning without you having to loose any weight.

It's also an incentive to make you loose some weight (if you can).

It's best to start looking NOW and choosing NOW especilly when you've got your venue sorted out.

    ALL THE BEST!!!!!!
