low alcohol / no alcohol drinks

Jellicle, 21 April, 2008 at 21:11 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 25

Does anyone have any low alcohol beer and cider that they really like the taste of? Alternatively, are there any long summer type drinks that you drink instead of lager, for instance.

I like Ginger ale mixed with cranberry juice or lime and soda.

never tried low alcohol drinks though.

I am a serious lager lover and I like shandy if I don't want to get too battered.

Another one for lime and soda - so so refreshing. If you're having alcohol, just add vodka!

Plus it costs less than £1 in bars - most places more like 50p - so a much cheaper option than coke.

Sainsburys do an almost alcohol free cider in bottles that I have been finding very drinkable.

Sparkling elderflower cordial is nice as a long drink.

Another vote for 0% Cobra and the sainsbury's 1% cider.

Tesco does a 0.5% cider, and I am also addicted to 0% Kopperberg Pear cider.

Bottlegreen cordials are very nice - they have a good range.

I'm a fan of tonic water - I find an evening on non alcoholic drinks normally leaves you all clagged up and sugary with the feeling your teeth are about to disolve.

Lemon, lime and bitters. That's lemonade with lime cordial and a splash of bitters. You might have to find an antipodean bartender to make it for you though.

I agree, but the Bitteburger Drive is the best alcohol-free beer I've ever tasted. I've had life-long lager drinkers think it's palatable!

I had a panaché (lager shandy) with a splash of Grenadine in France one year. Very refreshing and the Grenadine takes the edge off the lager if you're not a great fan.

Adding grenadine to a lager shandy is called a Monaco... and takes me right back to my year in France when I was an English Assistant working 6 hours a week and spending the rest of my time getting to know the locals!

I require alcohol-free drinks to be calorie-free also. Best one I've found is slimline tonic with lemon, because you can pretend it contains gin ?

Could I pretend it contained vodka instead, please? I don't like gin.

I'm so with you on that one - if I'm not chucking alcohol into my body I go completely the other way and want the drink to be low cal ?

That said (and I know the wine police will be on to us for this one) but we've started having red wine spritzers at home. It's fab, I make them really weak and can make my standard glass of wine last for 3 or 4 glasses, topped up with sparkling water. And it means we can buy cheap wine too ?

A favourite in our house is Rock Shandy - 1/2 Ginger beer, dash lime, lemonade to top up and couple drops of bitters. Lots of ice!

It is very well known in Glasgow, not so well known in other places. I got some strange looks from the barman when I ordered one in Inverness even though my friends up there drink them regularly.

You can buy Magners lights ?

I usually go with sparkling elderflower or one of the non alcohol fruity drinks a bit like schloer

Also tryhttp://www.cusquena.co.uk/ for a really refreshing lager, I hate lager but this is really quite nice!

Elderflower cordial with sparkling water or lime and soda/ lime and (cloudy organic)lemonade for me.

Sainsbury's do merlot grape juice in the chilled juices section that is rather tasty and a nice substitute for red wine so you don't feel too left out at dinner parties.
