lower cost wedding dresses

ames2uk, 13 June, 2011 at 21:23 Posted on Planning 0 20

Hi guys

I'm hoping to go dress shopping in the next few weeks (just have to wait till July before can book the wedding so nearly there now!) and I was wondering if you could give me an idea of the more affordable designers! I've been looking online but no where gives any prices so its hard to tell where to budget

I've budgeted up to £800 altho realistically i would prefer to spend £500 ish - which designers are in this price bracket?

Thanks girlies

Is that budget including alterations? My Maggie Sottero was only £820...and I've heard of people haggling to get discounts (unfortunately I'm not brave enough!)

My dress alterations were just over £100. It might be worth looking at ex shop samples and also wedding dress warehouses. Have you looked on Preloved?

My dress was £800... I was charged over £200 in advance for alterations but I ended up having my dress delivered to a different store from the one I ordered it in and they didn't have an instore alterations service so they refunded it, eventually. In the end I didn't get any alterations which makes me wonder if they'd have done them just for the sake of it?

I got my maggie dress in a bridal store sample sale ? £350! Bargain and its beautiful! Fits perfect except the length so not loads to do for alterations. I told the lady my budget was around 6-700 and she pointed me in the right direction, that way i didnt even look at anything that was way out of my budget.

I know some of the Phil Collins dresses are within that price range, if that helps.

Hi, have a look at jasmine bridal dresses, they are quite reasonably priced and they're beautiful.

My Ellis Bridal dress was £575 in a bridal shop. Speaking to the lady at my final fitting, she was telling me that often Ellis are sold for more, but because they sell their dresses off the rack and get what they're given from the suppliers, so to speak, they get them for a better price and therefore sell them for cheaper. I'd look around lots of shops, as the shop I bought my dress in was on the same road as two other bridal shops with nothing for less than £1000. Other than that, preloved is a great idea. And depending what you want, some high street dresses are gorgeous, specifically Monsoon.

Apparently so! I didn't realise to be honest until the lady said. I'm very glad I wandered into that shop now!

If I were you I would look out for sample sales at bridal shops or get a second hand dress. Anything second-hand will have been only worn once.

I got vintage (which is second hand I guess), but if I didn't, I would have got something from pre-loved.

To be honest, i don't really want to buy a second hand dress! I want something shiney and new ? I know it's silly! (i'm not even a fan of buying clothes on ebay really!)

I'm going to have a look at sample dresses i guess.

It seems ridiculous though that on a budget of £500-800 (which is a lot of money) the wedding industry in general is saying it's not enough money! Oh Well!

I've had a look on Monsoon/BHS/Phase Eight/Coast etc and can't really see anything I like at all. But then again, looking on the main wedding designer sites I can't see anything either! I'm an awkward duck I think :-)

I'm sure once i start looking properly i'll find something. Got plenty of time, hey ho!

My Maggie was £750 and that included the alterations (£30 from the dress shop) and my veil - and that was all brand spanking, shiney new?

I guess where you are in the country couls also have a bearing on price sometimes too

    Coolio

I'm assuming that living in the parochial humdrum of Ipswich should be OK - definitely not the bright lights, big city here!

Only another month till we can book the wedding, then I can start looking properly. yay
