Madeira

EmmaJo, 29 November, 2011 at 12:48 Posted on Planning 0 1

We are thinking of Madeira for our Honeymoon in March next year.

Has anybody been? I'd be very interested to hear your thoughts, good or bad!

My parents went a couple of years ago and loved it. They said it was quiet, picturesque, great seafood. Oh, and very high (i.e. cliffs). They painted a picture that sounded perfect for slightly older people. If you like quiet walks and lovely gardens, you'll be sorted!

    Hi,

I went in 2010. We stayed in a Thompson Gold hotel out of season (so no children, mostly couples in their 50s plus so we stood out!) It was a very nice hotel, had a pool and we had a sea view. It suited us as we really need a relaxing holiday without 'fun' (bars, activities etc).We ate in the hotel as we were half board so I didn't sample the local seafood. Should be a lot though as it is surrounded by sea!

Drawbacks: No sandy beaches, particuarly around Funchal the capital. It is a rocky island so it is straight off rocks into the sea. Get a hotel with a pool as the Lido is a bit rubbish.

It is practically formed of a huge hill that slopes into the sea. Can mean great views when you get up there but no good if a) you like leisurely walks as opposed to hikes and b) if you like to travel around and visit things a lot. You will need to get a bus/taxi everywhere.

Advantages: Going into the hills and to the easterly points is amazing - didn't go to the west but hear that is also spectacular. We went on a catamaran tour and saw dolphins which was the highlight of the holiday. Some interesting/ beautiful buildings to look at (which I love).

We went end of September and it was still warm enough to be in a bikini round the pool every day.

Our hotel was in the hotel district, west of Funchal. You could stay in the city and therefore be close to bars etc. There are much fancier hotels, particularly in the east from the city that would give a more luxurious feel to your honeymoon.

    I hope this helps...
