Madonna and REM reviews

WelshTotty, 26 August, 2008 at 09:34 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 8

Went to see Madonna on Saturday night, Millennium Stadium Cardiff.

Gates opened 30 minutes late at 6pm, everyone piled in. Crowd waited 3 hours for her to turn up, no support bands to keep folk occupied, restless crowd did some mexican waves, clapped, cheered, then booed as they were tired of waiting.

She started at about 9pm, gave a good show, didnt sing some of her songs but kind of improvised over backing tracks of a couple of her tunes. 4 different costumes, lots of dancing etc etc. 11pm all done, screens come down with 'game over' written on them, lights go up, no encore. Thats was it.

Quite disappointing really, I expected a lot more.

Went to see REM last night in Cardiff Arena.

Doors opened 6pm, First support act get to it at 7pm - The Guilimots. Theyre first song 'get over it' was their peak the rest of what they played was dross, with no particular tune just messy noise (sounds like Im becoming an old codger) Second support followed - Editors. Really really good, I liked them lots and they played 45 mins, excellent.

REM came on at 9pm to rapturous applause and screaming and played a fantastic set. The crowd went bonkers, they played new stuff and lots of the old classics too, they really were fantastic. 5 songs for encore one being Loosing my Religion which was just brilliant and I left the arena, a very very happy bunny.

I am no totally knackered and have come to the conclusion that 2 gigs in a weekend is just too much for me!

It sounds like REM had much more atmosphere than Madonna. I love 'Get Over It' and the Editors.

I'm awaiting reviews from other Madonna concerts on the tour with interest as apparently they have support bands and I wonder if it'll make a different as people get 'warmed up'.

The REM gig was packed to the rafters and the atmosphere was fab, the support acts really do make a difference as everyone was really fired up by the time REM cam on stage.

Id be interested to hear about reviews from Madonnas other gigs if there are support bands, as I reckon the lack of support did contribute to it being a bit flat and the crowd do need warming up first.

I've just looked at the tour listing and she's playing Nice tonight. I'll have to dust off my rusty French tomorrow and look at some reviews.

Good news on REM - I am seeing them at Twickenham this Sat with the same supporting acts. Doors are meant to open at 4pm though according to the tickets so either I have a long wait in store or a much earlier finish!

Me too!! I'm taking my mum, dad & OH (he's not really bothered but I've told him he has to come)

Show starts at 5.30 so we'll probably aim for that...I'm not sitting around for hours.

Our tix said doors open at 6 and they did and starts at 7 and it did, so if it says it starts at half 5 then they will, their timekeeping was great, unlike Madonna who was reportedly an hour late (just read a review in the paper today on Saturdays performance)

I guarantee youll all have a great time at the REM gig, the crowd went bonkers and everyone had a sing along.
