Make up problems

AniaF, 4 April, 2011 at 19:47 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hi ladies, I had a make up trial this afternoon and it didn't go very well, i'm so disappointed. I have never worn make up, I experimented with it a little in my teens but I found that I didn't like how it looked, it made my skin feel gross and it took me too long to do so I gave it up. I had a few free trials at department store counters because I decided to give it another go and I always felt I looked old after them, well mum advised me to book a professional wedding make up artist for a trial because they would make me look better and after this trial I think I look just as old as I did after the department store trial.

Mum wants me to wear make up, she knows I don't like it but she said that she doesn't want to show my wedding photos to our relatives and be embarrassed because I look scruffy. There are pictures of me where I like how I look despite not wearing make up, is wedding photography so different that it will make me look bad?

I think that's very unfair of your mum! I'm sure you will not look scruffy and if you are uncomfortable wearing makeup you will just be very self conscious all day! Have you tried just putting mascara and a lip gloss on to look as natural as possible?

    Hey,

Yeh i agree with Rachel, it is your wedding and the pictures should reflect who u r, why make urself look and feel like someone else to please others?

however again like rachel said a little bit of mascara and light lipgloss may brighten you up a bit? Smiley smile

I think lip gloss is possibly one of the most difficult items for me to wear, the make up artist I saw today put some on me and I had to ask her to remove it because it felt all sticky and my hair somehow got stuck to it. Are they all like that or did she use an inferior product? She shouldn't have done for the money I would pay her to do my make up on the day.

Umm lipgloss does tend to be a bit sticky...perhaps a lipstick then or tinted lipblam? if u r wearing ur hair up shouldn't be a problem tho Smiley smile

I always find lipgloss a bit sticky but I've gotten used to it over the years and now kinda like the sensation ? Go for a second trial; the make-up lady won't be offended! I decided I really didn't like the look after my first trial so am having another one next week where we'll aim for a more subtle, natural look.

Wedding photography may well make you look a bit washed out if you have no make-up whatsoever, so try maybe a little bit of bronzer to bring out your cheekbones, some mascara or fake lashes to define your eyes and a long lasting lipstick to colour your lips. That should be enough to stand out in the photos without you feeling like you have loads on!

What about a tinted moisturiser (i like lancome) , cream blusher (clinique) , smidgen of eyeshadow (mac have loads of colours) , mascara (clinique naturally glossy is a very natural lookin product) & a tinted lip balm? (i use Elizabeth Arden tinted 8 hour lip stick things).

I think that with these kind of products you'd look like yourself but 'polished'?

Im not qualified in make up or anything but I just love it!

That still sounds like a lot of make up considering I don't wear any at all normally. I forgot to mention that I asked for something as natural as possible at my trial and I still got something I hated. I didn't want to tell her it was still too heavy because she did it twice and it wasn't much better.

AniaF - sorry to hear your trial didn't go well. If it were me, I wouldn't have let her leave until it was right - that's what you're paying her for, after all!

If you don't want to wear make up, don't! That said, I cannot think of anyone in the world, super models included, who doesn't photograph better with some make up on. It's entirely your choice though. Even if you get a good make up artist, if you don't like what she's done you won't look happy in the photos.

That make-up artist sounds rubbish. Of course you're not going to feel right wearing a full face of make-up if you usually don't wear any. Try asking for a make-over from one of the beauty counters in boots or a department store. Be VERY specific about what you want or they will try to put tons of make-up on you. Tinted moisteriser will even out your skin tone, a tiny bit of cream or gel blusher will give some colour and a little mascara will define your eyes. there are some good lipglosses which aren't sticky, but I think you might be better off buying a tinted lipbalm and applying it yourself - they don't cost much and its something that you can use again after the wedding. If you like the look then its very easy for you to do yourself. If it still doesn't feel right then go without. Ignore your mum, there is always someone who thinks they know better than you.

Have you tried bare minerals foundation, it's a powder and it can be applied really lightly to give your skin a "lift" on the day.

Lipglosses are always sticky, but a tinted lipbalm of a light lipstick as others have suggested will do the job nicely.

Generally people have recommended to me to wear more defined make up on the day to look yourself in photos, so you may want to speak to your TOG, one of the make up HIBs in here or just have some pics with/ without makeup on and see what you like.

If I were you I would have another free trial at a dept store, don't say it's for a wedding, just say nice day make up, a bit of base, blush, mascara and lipstick and hopefully you will be pleasantly surprised with what they come up with. I really like trials at MAC, but they never seem to do au naturel, I also like bare minerals and clinique which are more focused on the natural look, or lots of girls on here like Bobbi Brown.

    Good luck!

Them sort of products really would create a natural look. I think, for pictures especially, make up goes a long long way.

Take a look few bridal magazines to see if there is any make up on brides that you like & take it to a make up artist & ask them to re-create the look on you. Thats what I done & I was pleased with my make up trial a couple of weeks ago.

Be very very firm & tell them you generally dont wear make up & want it to be extremely light & fresh looking.
