Make up- professional or DIY??

claire2999, 18 April, 2012 at 11:47 Posted on Planning 0 21

In a dilemma about my wedding make up.

What are your thoughts on getting it done by a local salon or doing it yourself??

I am a mascara-aholic and am not sure if anyone else will spend the time that I would do....but on the other hand, if I get it done professionally, they can do false lashes for me.

I'm torn- want to be pampered, but also want to look how I want to look (if you know what I mean!) Thoughts please!!!

I am the same but I am definitely getting done by someone else. I stress about putting makeup on on a night out so dont want to stress on my wedding day! Just be prepared to say you don't like something. I worry I'm not gonna look 'myself' or have a pale face, but if you leave plenty of time for her to re-do little bits, that should be fine. You could also have a trial Smiley smile

Well of course I'm biased but a pro makeup artist will know what products will enhance your features and look amazing in the flesh but on camera too (lots of makeup doesn't photograph well at all). They should also be able to use the correct products that means your makeup will last all day and night. You've gone to all that effort with choosing your wedding dress and your face is an extension of that. If you do decide to go for a pro makeup artist I would choose someone with lots of experience, good photos and reviews. Juliet x

I'd go with the pro! Take away the stress, enjoy your champers and let someone else do the work. I'd recommend a trial though to make sure you get the look you want and you can discuss the mascara/false lashes. I have no option but to do my own and have already spent £150 on makeup as I want really nice products that will photograph well and last all day etc. I've still got bits to buy as well so it's probably cheaper to get a MUA!!

I'm doing DIY... I will probably spend the same amount of money as I would have on a pro stylist, but I would rather spend that money on product that I will then get to keep and wear lots. I've been to have the tutorials at chanel and bobbi brown and heard all about what flash photography does, and what colours would be best, and I've been practicing my eyeliner with the brush.

It's not for everyone, though. I know a lot of people would find it stressful having to do their own make up, but for me it's my hair I'm more worried about!!

I'm going pro, aside from the obvious good products, experience of what will suit etc I want to just sit back and be pampered!

It sounds like you would like a pro but haven't quite found the perfect person. With me, it's all about communication and trust. I couldn't find anyone I felt comfortable with for my day so I spent the money on some pro tools and make up (Bobbi Brown, Estee Lauder and Mac) then roped my Beauty Therapist Auntie in to helping me. I love doing my own make up but you do need someones help on your wedding day as anything can happen! I also didn't fancy putting eyeliner on if I suddenly got the excited shakes! She did do it a lot heavier that I wanted on the day but on the photo's it looks great so I know now that you do need to look like a more made up you...as long as you look like you! Smiley smile

I have been lucky enough to work with some great pro's so can highly recommend Flossy and Leigh as well as Michelle who does the make up for My Boudoir!

I've ummed and arrhed about this too until I'm blue in the face!

I love the way I do my own make-up the problem is it just doesn't last long enough and my blemishes that were covered start to show through and my lovely neat eyeliner ends up smudged!

I was so worried this is down to my skin rather than product or application as the same make-up can stay put on my mum's face! And that a MUA wouldn't make any difference to my make-up's staying power and then I'd wish I'd done it myself!

Nevertheless I've decided to take the plunge and have a MUA...need to get one booked though(!)

I want to be pampered and not have to get myself ready on the morning of the wedding! And I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the MUA I choose does a good job and the make-up lasts!

Wish you were closer Juliet would love you to have done my make-up!

I agree with Juliet. A pro makeup artist knows what they are doing in terms of what looks good on you, colours, products etc. What looks good on camera.

Also on the day it means you know what time your makeup is going to be done and you can take that time to sit back and relax and feel confident that your makeup will look perfect and be done right first time.

    You're welcome Juliet.

Just a quick question in response to my first post....I know it depends on the MUA...but do you think a good MUA artist should be able to get my make-up to last all day regardless of my skin type (think I perspire more than average!) given what I said about the same make-up on my mum etc.?

I think you need to have the right kind of make up to DIY it.

I'm normally quite frugal with things but if there's one thing I spurge on its Make-up and Hair products. I've long suffered from eczema and I still have terrible acne flare ups at 21 so I'm very self concious about my skin and what I use on it, add that to a slight case of OCD when it comes to my 'getting ready routine' and the way I like my cat eye flick, there's no way anyone else will be doing my make-up on the day.

OBVIOUSLY not Juliet or a MUA but I would imagine they have techniques and tips and a few products that would aid this. I know there's a fixing spray a MUA mentioned that I've tried to find online but then talked myself out of due to extravagance! While I would defo get a MUA if I had one in the vicinity and think it's well worth the money, they can't do magical things and ultimately make up is made to come off. Good primers help, a decent foundation and I heard that lightly blotting your face with tissue after applying the foundation helps get rid of excess oil although not sure if this is fact or fiction. I'm actually just hoping that by 9pm I'm having a lovely time and so involved in chatting to guests and dancing that I have forgotten all about my make up and won't care either!

Professional all the way, can't be dealing with the stress of doing it myself.

Professional for me too. I dont think my wedding nerves could take doing it myself and also want it to look immaculate for photos etc. However cant find a MUA for love nor money that isn't booked up for wedding day so might not have a choice but to do my own ☹️

Yes a good MUA would have the correct products to make your makeup last all day regardless of your skin type. In my kit I have promers, foundations, powders etc to cover all different skin types.

Juliet I am in Rotherham. Lauren Sally is booked but been really helpful reccomending a couple of people. Unfortunatley they are all booked bore 1. Helen Archer is available but cant get hold of her via email or phone to book.

I have booked someone for it, but I'm really nervous about it for a few reasons.

First, the only time I've ever had my make-up professionally done was at a friend's wedding several years ago, and I ended up looking like a clown! Okay, maybe not quite like a clown, but I looked VERY VERY made-up. I tried taking off most of the make-up and redoing it, but when I look at the pictures now, I still look so BRIGHT (and not in that healthy, glowing kind of way.) So, I'm really scared it'll happen again. I have a trial booked a couple days before, but if that turns out poorly, it's not as if I can find a quick replacement! (And I can't do it really any sooner because we live 6 hours away from where we're getting married. Plus, I don't really want to shell our £40-50 for another trial if this didn't work!)

Second, after looking at TONS of mobile/bridal make-up websites and their portfolios and getting quotes, I finally decided on one that looked the best balance of the style I preferred and cost. However, when I emailed and asked for portfolio photos of the girl that would specifically be doing my make-up, the owner of the company just said that the photos are representative of all their work (basically refusing to send me specific photos). Should I be worried? Wouldn't you want photos of the work of your make-up artist?

Anyways, long ramble short -- I will probably have someone, but I'm having doubts as to whether I should keep the person I've booked.

    I did mine myself.

I hate people touching my hair and face, so having someone else do it for me was a no no.

Plus, I know how I like my make up, and wouldn't trust anyone else.

    Hi,

When I got married I went to Clinique beauty counter, had a makeover and bought some products to recreate! I was very happy.

However, when my sis got married in America. She and my mum had a makeover and they looked gorgeous.

My feeling is if your budget stretches treat yourself!!!!
