Makeup? Doing your own?

milna, 1 April, 2009 at 10:07 Posted on Planning 0 5

My mums hairdresser is doing hair for bridesmaids and I (wedding is near Mums house - 250 miles from home for me, so cant use my hairdresser) - we've had a practice, and I'm happy with what she did. Her daughter is a trained beautician/beauty therapist, but is not working as one. There has been talk of the daughter doing our makeup. I am not sure if I would be better off doing my own though? I'm sure she knows lots more about makeup than me, but am worried that she may not have the specific experience with wedding makeup (she is youngish - early 20s I think) - and I am really worried about ending up not looking 'like me' (or looking like a transvestitie if she piles it on ?). I am also thinking that as she is not actually working regularly as a beautician, we will probably having to use our own makeup anyway?

I am not massively confident with makeup - and don't wear it everyday (though do usually do mascara, and tend to do the whole lot once a week or so) ... should I trust myself to do my own ...? ? My sister (bridesmaid) really seems to think that we should ask hairdressers daughter to do us - and sister is great at makeup, so am a bit worried she is pushing for it because she is trying to save me from my own makeup skills! ?

Can you perhaps arrange to go and see her for a make up "lesson" that way you can see what she is like and find out if you get on well with her/have the same ideas how you want to look etc without committing to the day? If you like her/the make up you can ask her then if she can come on the day?

FWIW - Mum, BMs and I had a trial with a make up artist and decided that we don't want to go ahead as we were happier with doing it ourselves - but did pick up a few tips from her on the day.

Definitely try and arrange a trial so that you can try out different styles and see what you think to this girl. She might be really good or you might be better off doing your own.

Definately doing my own make up, as everytime I've had a make up artist do it I just end up looking fake and not myself. But, I'm thinking I will go to one of the make up counters at boots or a department store (probably Estee Lauder) and have a little make over a while before hand and buy the make up I like the best, as well as picking up some tips.

I have had three trials at two I ended up looking like H2B at punched me in the nose giving me black eyes! The third was very heavy and I had an awful line around my jaw line! I gave up

I went to Estee Lauder she showed me what to do, took it off when I didn't like it and put more on and made suggestions. It was expensive but I now have make up to wear for the next 6 months and I can practice before the wedding.

In My personnal experience go with your own work. But if you are scared have trials and see what others do you can always steel their advice and still go and do your own!!

My mum's a hairdresser too so she'll hopefully be doing my hair on the day. If not, I'll be able to do it myself as I'm pretty much having it how it is everyday - mainly because it's not long enough to do anything else with and I still want to look like me.

As for the make up, I just can't decide what to do. Was debating doing it myself but I think I'd prefer to sit back and let someone else do it providing I'm happy with how they make me look in the trials! The problem is deciding who to go with and I haven't really got any recommendations from people.

Do you have time to have a practice with her? If not then I'd be inclined to not use her if you are unsure. What I would do is ask your sister to help you with yours though?!? Bridesmaid duties and all that!

I'm going to do my own as I am pretty confident at doing it but am going to experiment with some primers and long lasting foundations before the day etc. My sister is good with hers too but we will help out the other BM who is not so good on the day. Am hoping it will be fun and girly!
