Making an offer on a car?

Hugo Brambles, 13 August, 2009 at 15:40 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

My search for a RAV4 continues - there is a gorgeous one on autotrader but at 10,500 its £500 over my maximum budget. Do you think its worth making an offer of £10,000 or is that just wishful thinking? I've never bought private before so although I'm used to haggling with dealers, not sure what the done thing for private sales is.

    Absolutely.

I've never paid full price for a car.

    It's completely normal to haggle.

Haggle away - i would offer less that £10k to start with as well. sellers expect people to haggle - cash works best too - not many people can walk away from a big wad of cash!

Offer 9k! Always be cheeky, then they'll say 10k, you can say 9.5k and it's happy days! x

Blimey - you guys drive a hard bargin!!

I've not seen the car in the flesh, from the ad and the fact that its got full service history it looks great. Any offer would be pending a final viewing so although its a bit chicken and egg, I don't want to drive 70 miles when I have no intention of paying £10,500 as I can only stretch to £10,000.

Have texted a couple of hours agao but no reply as yet. Should I ring or is that too keen?

Totally appreciate that you're a distance away but nothing annoys sellers more than buyers negotiating on the phone without even seeing the car first. My suggestion is to either find another one at a cheaper price or go and see it and then make a sensible offer based on the car's condition etc. Try getting a valuation for it on www.whatcar.co.uk as well so you know if it's in the right range or if not what age RAV you need to be looking for.

I hear what you're saying I reallyl do but I've been looking for 4 months now and I'm sick and tired - I just want a new car!! I would have it over the phone, pending obviously when I get there my mechanic gives it the once over and the thumbs up. It's the cheapest I've seen one at for the this age and condition and I could recite whatcars valuation off my head - honestly there is nothing I can't tell you about Rav4's ? I know it sounds dodgy wanting to negotiate when I've not seen it but as I say I'd totally feel like a tyre kicker driving there when I have no intention of paying the asking price as I don't have it. Would potentially be a complete waste of time for me and them.

Definitely ring. As a seller I wouldn't take an enquiry by text at all seriously, probably wouldn't even bother replying. Negotiating without seeing the car is going to make you seem dodgy enough but at least with a phone call you've got a chance of convincing them you're serious.
