Making my own Wedding Cake.

BrittGale, 4 April, 2011 at 14:55 Posted on Planning 0 5

Am I mad?

I've dabbled with cake decoration, had a few courses and even sold some of them!

But making my own...

My OH is worried i'll be too stressed, i'm worried it won't be good enough.

But we need ways to save money and if we bought one it would cut into our budget...

I don't think you're mad, my Mum and I made and decorated the cake for my first wedding, we are going to do the same for this one (my last wedding! ?)

Do you have an idea of what you want? I would say collect lots of ideas and start practising, on cupcakes or smaller cakes, you'll soon find out how much you can cope with

Um, yes and no!! i think it is a lovely thing to do, I wated to do mine but was talked out of it as would be too much to do in the run up plus we have to transport it in one piece on an 8 hour car journey so i decided that probs best to just get one made, I guess if you are having fruit cake it is not such a stress as it keeps for so long, I just dont like fruit cake so not an option for me. But sometimes i do wonder how cake shops justify the huge costs for some cakes tho! ?

I am doing ours...and doing lots of research into designs at the moment. I am doing fruit as the bottom tier (already made) and will have chocolate as middle and lemon as top.

I have done cakes for friends and family birthdays and my brothers wedding cake so have a bit of experience of what takes time etc....I think the trick is to pick something that you know you can do easily but will look amazing.

If you do think you will get really stressed then you could always do a fruit tier and the rest 'dummy' tiers and have cutting cakes hidden in the kitchen - that way you can make them waaaay in advance = no stress!

    Hiya!

No I dont think you are mad at all. If I could make cakes and ice them I would.. but I am rubbish at it. I do know what type of cake I want though.. I did want a funny topsy turvy type cake but went off that idea... I now want a simple 3 tier sponge cake covered in white icing, with cadbury purple ribbon around and possibly some diamante detail after seeing a cake on here someone flashed. I do want a comedy cake toper of figuring (love the ones with the bride dragging the groom by his collar haha!)... I have a cake lady I found on a local forum and facebook who will probably charge less then £100 (she wanted £80 for the topsy turvy idea including figurines of me, H2B and kids on it), so guess not much more. But she is really hard to chase and I am getting a bit fed up of sending emails to her so am thinking of buying the tiers from M&S and DIYing it as all I would need to do is put ribbons and cake toppers on it!

    Good luck! x
