Making own cake...

josephine, 2 April, 2013 at 21:08 Posted on Planning 0 5

I am quite tempted to try and make my own wedding cake - and ice it! I have been looking at this recipe on bbcgoodfood, and think it seems doable. I am relatively confident about the cake-making process - I make cakes quite frequently, but not iced ones.

Has anyone else done this?: : http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/4578/creating-your-wedding-cake

I have never iced cakes though, and not sure how difficult it would be? Any tips/words of warning? I would be happy with a plain cake decorated with fresh flowers. What do people think? Is it much harder than it looks? What are the pitfalls?

The hitch would be that I will be effectively homeless in the weeks leading up to the wedding. My partner lives abroad, and i will be packing up our stuff in the uk, and giving up the flat a couple of weeks before the wedding so I will have a nomadic couple of weeks drifting between friends and my parents, therefore I won't have my own kitchen. It is much easier to cook in my own space with my own oven/food mixer/tins etc. Do you think it is worth it? Or should i give it up as too much stress?

    I'm a cake maker, and i decorate some, Christmas...etc...

I made my brothers weddign cake, and my aunts 40th anniversary cake, which i basket iced - and was proud of the results

But i've decided against making mine, i just think its too much hassle at a time when i'll already be worrying about things, and then i;d have to trust someone else to assemble it on the day, so i've taken the soft option and am getting mine made Smiley smile

Whatever you decide, as long as you're happy with the decision, its the right one Smiley smile

I made my wedding cake. It was a single tier, with cupcakes though. I'd never really baked before, but took the risk.

It turned out OK. Can't post pics from my phone though...

My OH and I planned to make our own cake. Then we did a practice one and the icing caused a bit of stress, and we realised that it would be so much more stressful right before the wedding and we didn't want that. So I recommend you have a practice (perhaps try practicing at your parents house if their kitchen will be available before the wedding and yours won't) and see how you feel.

I'm making mine with my sister, although mine are cupcakes rather than one big cake! I think the main thing is getting the right tools and having a few practice runs before the big event! Also, make it, ice it and see if it lasts a couple of days without drying out/cracking etc So it gives you more time as the wedding day approaches. If you can make it a couple of days before and know it'll be alright that will aid the stress levels attempting to do it all the day before! I'm saving £££ doing it myself and I'll be able to take the credit if people compliment them Smiley laugh xXx

Oh yeah! And, practice baking in an oven you'd be using to practice in. Baking times will vary. You don't wanna put the cake in for 30 mins for it to come out perfect in the practice run and burnt for the real thing!

    I am making mine.

I did a sugar craft course last term to learn how to ice the cake and do flowers. The icing is quite difficult if you haven't practice so it may be workth investing in a dummy cake or practising on cakes.
