Making your own veil?

irrelephant, 25 October, 2011 at 14:53 Posted on Planning 0 10

Has anyone made their own veil? I had my heart set on a cathedral veil but they are well over £100. I decided to borrow my cousin's waist length veil instead which is sparkly and gorgeous but i still really would love a cathedral veil and was wondering if anyone else has considered making their own?

I made my own - a double layer cathedral length one. Wasn't difficult really and cost me in the region of £14 including the beaded (pearl and crystal) comb I put it on. Oh, I beaded the comb myself too!

Is it worth seeing what Margaret on ebay can do for you? I've not used her (yet!) but so many other hitchers have given her rave reviews and say she is very reasonably priced and much cheaper than the shops.

I used Margaret & highly recommend. Many threads on here about her. You choose the tuelle from samples she will send, she will look at dress photos & make suggestions, or go with your ideas. Lots of great ideas and designs to choose from. Mine was finger tip length, 2 tier & baroque crystals for about £24. Best value I found & she accepts returns if you really dont like it. Just not worth trying the find the right colour/texture of tuelle from a shop, buy enough material, sew it onto a comb etc etc. You'd prob spend more on making it yourself with petrol, parking, faffing etc.

I couldn't find her on ebay? Teal, I reckon all in it will cost me about £20 for a full length cathedral veil, looking at tutorials I've seen online, that includes the comb, the tulle, very sharp scissors, the cottons and needles (which i already have) and petrol to and from the fabric shop.

Amnesia custard, was it difficult to do? Do you have an online tutorial or any advice?

I planned to make my own too, but ended up getting one from ebay for les than £5, way cheeper and quicker than making, so may be worth a search on there if you want to save money.

This is her page - someone else posted her email address on this thread too.

I made two. I made a shoulder length one and a birdcage one. Ended up using the birdcage one and they both cost me less than £10 to make. Have a go, its not always about money. At least if you do it yourself, it'll be exactly how you want it and you can tell people you made it. Smiley smile

Private sale. Mine was floor length, two layers and shaped edge which was exactly what I wanted, simple and unfussy as my dress was detailed. There are lots of bargins on there you just need to look for a little bit. But making your own would be fab and had I not come across this one I would have fitted in making my own - I made almost everything else!

Did you use an online tutorial? Where did you buy your material from?

Would you like to start a conversation with me and I'll tell you how I did it? (I think I accept conversations from anyone!) I'm sure it's too boring for the general masses here!

    But it was easy. Promise!
