Manchester Hitchers...

SassyT, 31 October, 2011 at 12:01 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hello ladies!

Long story short - our wedding is on a tight budget as I am disabled and can't work and H2B and I have 3 children!

Because of this, and because neither of us want to be too far away from the kids when we honeymoon we've decided to stay in the UK and do a small city break to Manchester.

Why Manchester you ask?! Well, H2B is a Man U FANATIC and you know how it is - the wedding is all about the bride and a lot of the time the groom gets left out so I thought it would be nice and fair if we made the honeymoon all about him!

Old Trafford tour is on the cards but what else can we do there? Hotels? As it's our honeymoon we do want to push the boat out a bit on the hotel and I think it would be best if we could get one in the city as I'll either be on crutches or a wheelchair depending on my illness (I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome on the severe scale), any recommendations for hotels and any ideas on what we can do there would be fab! We'll be there for 4 days

Ohhhhh, this is going to pain me as an avid Arsenal fan, but we do anything for love, right? Smiley smile

I would suggest going to cloud 23 in the Hilton- it's got a great view out over the city. You can either have afternoon tea there or cocktails in the evening! If you are planning to go there in the evening then you'll need to book a guestlist as it gets very busy.

I would second this to the max! Other great places for eating and drinking (in a posh honeymoon stylee) are Michael Caines at Abode (in fact, this is a hotel you could stay at), The Modern in The Urbis Museum, The Gaucho Grill, Panacea (for WAG spotting), Malmaison (for Ant and Dec spotting). Slightly less formal are The Ox on Liverpool Street (for Corrie celeb spotting) and Chaopraya in Chinatown. I've never been but I gather Aumbrey (sp?) in Prestwich is fab (but a taxi ride from town). The restaurant at The Midland Hotel (also a great hotel to stay in) is Michelin-starred, can't recall the name though.

There are plenty of live venues/theatres/concert halls. You could check out what's on at The Palace Theatre, The Bridgewater Hall, The Lowry, The Opera House to see if any of that tickles your fancy.

We have some fantastic museums. The Lowry (obviously), The Imperial War Museum North (near Old Trafford), The Museum of Science and Industry, Urbis (kind of a history of Manchester museum). Again, check in advance what's happening.

Don't bother with The Trafford Centre, unless you REALLY like shopping. It's just like any other shopping centre. The town centre is far more interesting (with far better shops).

    Hi SassyT,

I'm a Manchester bride, there is a hotel called Great John Street which is fab, gorgeous boutique hotel in the centre, very romantic and it has a roof top jacuzzi! (they do have a lift)

I am struggling to think of romantic things to do in Manchester, there is plenty of shopping to be done, lots of museums most of which are free. You could go on the Manchester Wheel, not quite the London Eye but on a good day can be nice! The Comedy Store is a good night out if you wanted something fun. There is the Palace Theatre and the Opera House if you are into the theatre. Close to Old Trafford is the Lowry Theatre and Gallery and the Imperial War Museum.

If you can give me more of an idea of what kind of things you like to do and the time of year I will try and think of more ideas.

Bit of a rambling response but hope it helps a little ?

    x

This would have you in a BRILLIANT location for glam, if slightly townie, drinking and eating.

Just to let you now Old Trafford is not in the centre but easily accessible by tram, so you're best staying in the city centre as they have the best hotels. The Midland is a nice one too, I've stayed there many a time.

Hi there. My OH is from Old Trafford so we never needed hotels but I have stayed at the Lancashire cricket ground and it was lovely. They do have upgraded rooms as well. It is 5 minute walk (if that) to Manchester United ground we. The only other ones I know of that are fab as said already are the Midland, Lowry and my mum stayed at the Portland hotel and said it was gorgeous xx

If you have money to spend then Great John Street hotel - a fave for the Take That boys when they are in town, The Lowry Hotel - a fave for the footballers (and the mischief they get up too), or The Hilton on Deansgate are my top tips for City Center hotels.

I think Manchester is a very romantic city. It has loads of galleries and museums (the Lowry Center on Salford quays is the best in my opinion and very close to Theatre of Dreams), the shops in town are lovely. It has an IMAX cinema and 2 beautiful theatres as well as a very varied nightlife.

The BBC have moved a lot of their workforce up to Manchester, so why don't you look into seeing a tv programme being filmed at Media City or ITV Granada, as an ex tv researcher I can vouch for how much fun that is!

Whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy all that the city has to offer xx

It completely depends what you are both into and how long you have in manchester.

hotels I would try St John street hotel which is lush!

Man U stadium isnt in the centre but is only few mins out by tram.

For a good steak get yourself into Gaucho grill or Grill on the alley, for thai go to Chapoyrha, I would definaltey reccommend cocktails in the Hilton cloud 23 bar. Book a table for sunset Smiley smile

If you have an idea of what you want to do let us know and we can tell you the best places Smiley smile

The V&A Marriott is really lovely, there is parking if you are coming in a car, if not its only a short taxi ride from United and still in town, its also near to the Opera house if you fancy a show.

A friend of mine stayed here at the weekend

    http://www.macdonaldhotels.co.uk/our-hotels/manchester-townhouse-hotel/gallery/

Was supposed to have been fab!

I too can recommend Grill on the Alley (went there after we got engaged and spent a fortune on cocktails and champers!) or San Carlos (lots of celeb spotting here!). Cloud 23 at the Hilton is excellent too for a special occasion, if you get there before 7pm you don't have to queue.

Ohh ladies, thank you SO much, you have really spoilt me with choices and ideas, got me very excited!!

Cloud 23 sounds amazing but I fear it might be a bit posh for us lol

Comedy Club will be a must and if there are any being recorded at the time a TV show would be great, I've always wanted to be an audience member - what a fantastic idea thank you Laura!

And STEAK, my favourite!! We'll certainly be taking up the recommendations for that!

We'd also really like to look around Chinatown so anything there would be great too!

    Hi ladies

I got married at the Great John St recently and sadly would definitely not recommend it!

Try the Lowry; Malmaison is really wonderful too and a bit different. The Place is good as well.

Hope it all goes well x

There are lots of nice restaurants. I would say go to Sapporo Tepanyaki for dinner followed by cloud 23 for drinks- very near each other. I went there for a romantic birthday recently and it was perfect! I don't know about hotels as have never stayed but I know the Midland is nice. If you like Chinese food Yang Sing is nice (but expensive). I also like China town. The restaurtant is also nice! You could take a train into the peaks (eg. Edale) and have a lovely rural pub lunch. Theres so many lovely restaurants in Manchester!
