Marathon runners and the like, do you get "down in the dumps" after the event?

Disco, 2 May, 2009 at 09:38 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 4

H ran the London Marathon last week, having trained hard for it. He hasn't ran since, and last night he was really down in the dumps, which is very unlike him.

I just wonder whether this is a common occurrence after an event like that?

I suggested that if he fels physically up to it he should try and make time to get out running today, and he said he would.

The temptation to post something about how the phrase "down in the dumps" applies to Paula Radcliffe is overwhelming, but I'm fighting it off.

It's totally normal - he's had a big goal that he's planned & trained towards for months & now it's over. I've felt very grumpy mumpy after maras. He needs a new goal!! How about a non running one?

I'm glad you're fighting the temptation, I wouldn't want to have to roll my eyes.

Thanks PUP, it's good to know it's normal. He's talking about running a few half marathons, to aim to improve his time with each one.

His goal for today is to erect a fence in our garden, so that's not helping his sour mood!

Tell hm to get out and do a few short runs, and just enjoy it. We didn't get down at all after ours, but we had loads of other stuff on.
