market research question - jewellery websites + Layout

Wren, 15 June, 2010 at 08:34 Posted on Planning 0 5

I am in the process of redoing my website and getting a shop on it too. I'm not sure how to organise the shop, so would you mind telling me how you prefer jewellery to be laid out:

  1. By type of item i.e. tiaras all together, necklaces etc
  2. By range i.e. all the matching items together, so tiara, hairpin, necklace, bracelet etc that all match on one page.
  3. The option to look at jewellery by type of item and by matching items i.e. both the above?

I'd really appreciate some feedback as I'm getting a headache trying to work out what pages to have and how to have it set out and linked together. Much prefer creating jewellery than websites!

If I was shopping online, I would like to select the type of item say Tiara, and then be able to find the other items that match it...i'd go for both!

I prefer a jewellery website to be organised by type with links to the matching items. If the matching items are easy to find, I'm more likely to buy them. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the feedback - it's as I suspected!

As a customer, I like it to be both ways. As a website creator, I'd like it simple! I'm using wordpress now as it should be easier as what I had been using to create my website, but I can still see me getting stuck!

I like to see everything ordered by type (e.g. necklaces, earrings etc) with links on each page to a) related items (stuff that looks similar) and b) matching items (i.e. from the same set). The first because I might click on a thumbnail and it's not quite right, but you have something else that's close and I like better. The second because I rarely buy matching sets, but sometimes I can be tempted by matching items if they are nice.

I use wordpress as well but it might be how my website it set up and I can't add links to matching items which is really annoying but there isn't much I can do. Someone very kindly set my website up for free so I can't grumble and I find it really use to update but just wish I could do a few more things with it.

If I can help with wordpress let me know although my technical abilities are limited!

    Thanks for additional feedback.

PurrfectGems - Thanks for the offer of help. I'm really lucky as H is really good with websites, but I'm doing as much as I can myself so I understand it and will be able to update it and maintain it myself without having to ask him all the time.....well, that's the theory anyhow!
